The Original Smith Bros. Fish Shanty

This was the original Smith Bros. Restaurant in the Los Angeles area. The restaurant was located in Walteria, which is now part of Torrance, and was the same location as the Indian Village Restaurant which replaced it in about 1968. The unusual niche this restaurant served was name recognition of the Smith Bros. ability to offer Great Lakes fish to a largely former midwestern clientelle.

When this restaurant opened, both Oliver H. Smith, and his sister Evelyn C. Smith bought houses around what is now known as Palos Verdes. Unfortunately for them, they sold their homes in the mid 60's before the sprawl reached them. At the time, Los Angeles was a growing city, but had yet to engulf the area around Torrance and San Pedro.

Oliver Smith, already a legend in Wisconsin,  was a well known figure at the San Pedro and Long Beach area where he befriended many a fisherman over a stiff drink or two.
