FEEDER - Hammersmith 21-03-06

After just finishing a 84 hour week at work I seriously needed  to rock out  & what better way to do that to see one  of  the top  pop - metal acts around.  I will get my rant out of the way at the beginning.  I got to the venue nice and early for a change and after checking out the merch…..not bad - I got a cool tour T-shirt for £16 - I decided to take my place upstairs. Yes, I was seated!   That was the biggest mistake I ever made & has made me all the more determined to arrive late at  future gigs so I can miss the support act. I could write 10 pages on why Goldie Looking Chain are so crap - but I won’t……got too much to say about Feeder! All I will is say “Oi, GLC NO!!!!!”  They totally enforced my opinion that Hip-Hop is noise pollution……and has no place at a ROCK concert. Why they couldn’t have a decent  young & hungry rock band - like Area 54 for example - as support is beyond me. Rant Over!

On to the main event….. At just after 9pm Grant and the boys took stage with a “woooohooooo” that could only be Feeling A Moment - a cool way to start the set.   Compared with the previous Feeder gig I attended last April at
Brixton, this one had more emphasis on the heavier side of Feeder & I feel it worked perfectly - the fact my ears are still ringing is proof of that!. And if the sound of the new single “Lost & Found” is any indication of what direction the new album will take, then I can’t wait ‘cos that track rocked really hard. It seems they have got over the tragic loss of  Jon Lee with the relatively lightweight previous 2 albums and are returning to what they do best……and Rock out.

Grant seemed genuinely pleased to be back after recovering from the throat problems that caused the original December dates to be cancelled, but  it was noticeable that he took every opportunity to take a drink of water. Bass man Taka was like a man possessed - he wouldn’t keep still…..like Steve Harris on speed! The band in general were really tight and were on top of their game….. The second guitarist (Dean Tidey) they use on tour really helps, giving them a real heavy and punchy sound - even with the relatively light Bitter Glass & enabling Grant to express himself more freely with some stunning solo’s especially during the immense Descend.

The set list was a cool mixture of old and new & seeing as they have a greatest hits album coming out in May, there was a rare outing for “Waiting For Changes” which made my evening complete ‘cos I love that track!  The crowd were going noisily potty and judging by the number of surfers downstairs, everyone was having a great time……..not many people were sitting in the seats either!  Even when Grant’s guitar broke at the start of Tumble & Fall, the atmosphere never flagged - it gave the band  a chance to mention the release date of the  Album (1st of May) at least!

Highlights? Almost impossible to pick out as it was such a great night, but if pushed, I would say Pilgrim Soul, Descend, Waiting For Changes, 7 Days……. Overall, a really great show  -  Tight, heavy, melodic pop metal at it’s very best. I just wish I had tickets for tonight.  If I did, I would arrive at 8.30pm to miss the support act !
