"My Girl Min"

Once a dog has entwined himself round your heart
he is not only yours for life, but you are his.
When he is gone, his place is forever sacred.
Other dogs are just as precious but they all have their allotted spot
in you affections kept for them or their memory.
A heaven without one's dogs would not be the heaven we hoped for.
A dog is always man's best friend."
-Unknown-

I got Min from the SPCA. She was a cross between a
collie and a shepard. I went to the SPCA
to get a small dog, but when I saw Min, I was done.
She put her head in my hand, licked it, then just looked at me
with the biggest, softest brown eyes I ever saw! I melted right there.
The staff told me she had been there four months and was due
to be put to sleep the next day. Home we came!
I named her after my grandmother, Minnie Moon.

She was a tri-color, long haired dog of 90 pounds.
Her hair was so thick and long, she had to be groomed often.
I wasn't sure how she would like that, but she loved it!
She would beg to be first, loving the attention. If she felt
she was being slighted or just wanted attention, she would
bark insistently until she got it. She craved attention, demanded it,
maybe having to do with being abondoned the way she had been
and spending so many months in the SPCA.

Min was a very loyal, overly friendly dog, always ready
to lick your face. She was obedient in most ways, except
staying in our yard. No matter what we did, she would wait til
we weren't watching, then made a dash for the nearest hill.
The only way I could get her back was to get my car
and go after her. She would see, hear my car, come running
with her tail wagging and jump in the back seat, happier then happy.
If I didn't go after her, she would come home after her running
was done. That was her way.

My house was never "dog proofed" until Min.
She had this uncanny way of getting into my kitchen cupboards
and drawers! She would hook her paw on the bottom of the drawers
and snag them open! Or, she would catch her feet underneath the
doors unlatching them. She then ate whatever was in them. I could never
break her of that, so hubby put latchs on the top of them
so she couldn't get into them. It was the family joke
that my kitchen was "Min proofed!"

Lighning and thunder were things she was terrified of.
She would get on top of us, trying to get close and secure.
If we weren't home, she tryed to dig to China!
She pulled the bath tub drain out trying to bury herself more then once.
The computer stand has a hollow place underneath, she would
get under it, pulling out the electric cords disconnecting my computer.
She would try her hardest to hide from the sound.
Guns were another thing she was terrified of. The guys used
to sight their guns in here, that had to end also. I could
never make her not afraid of the noise of fire works either.

Min loved all kids, but our oldest grandson was her favorite.
He would tell me on his way here, "Min's going to lick me!"
She adored him, never leaving his side when he was here.
She slept as close to his room as she could get, watching
to see no one ever hurt him. She would watch our
every move with him making sure he was not harmed. I seriously
think she would have defended him had the need ever arose.

She ruled the house, was the leader of the pack.
Bowser and Bodie would play and romp with her. If she had enough,
she would growl at them with her teeth showing, lip curled.
She actually looked ferocious! They would back right off,
no questions asked. They always let her eat first.
They both thought the sun rose and set in her.

Min never met anyone she didn't like. She met everyone at the door,
tail wagging, never growling once at anyone. Our son-in-law was
at the top of the list with her. He always made over her,
scratching her belly, always calling her, "Minnie." My dad was another
of her favorites, she broke her neck getting to him, always laying
beside him after getting her loving.

Min slept with hubby and I, along with Bowser and Bodie.
She had to have the largest part of the bed, the other dogs
had to sleep on what was left.

Min developed bone cancer in her right front leg.
It wasn't as fast growing as usual, but after two months, it was huge.
During the first day of hunting season of 11/29/99, I had
to end her suffering. I had to run to my mom's that day,
was gone for an hour. When I came home, she was behind
the Christmas tree, which was lying on the floor.
I had broken ornaments everywhere. I couldn't yell at her, I knew
the shooting up back in the woods had scared her. When she
tried to stand, she fell flat. Her whole leg was swollen huge,
not just where the cancer was. The cancer had shattered her bone.
The pain med Torbutrol, wasn't controlling the pain as well either,
plus she was starting to cough. I knew the cancer had gone
to her lungs. I had no choice. I had a vet come
to the house to put her down, which was so much easier
on her, and us. I had a neighbor bury her beside Bodie
in our pit.

It was a very difficult thing to do after almost eleven
years of having her with me, plus it was the third cherished
pet I had lost in one and a half years. I was heart broken,
Bowser was devastated! He wouldn't come downstairs, stopped eating,
and drinking. I took him to the vet, after many tests and finding
nothing wrong, he said he was mourning Min.
They had been together from puppies.
I wondered too if he was wondering if he would suddenly
be taken away and not return? How can you explain to a dog
what happened? Bowser and I got through it together,
which helped us both.
Comforting him helped me and brought him around also.

Min was a good dog, she was, "My Girl."
Nothing can destroy the memories of her, which I will always
have and cherish. I miss her, even her antics which I didn't always
think were so funny at the time, but they were a part
of her. Most of all I miss her cuddliness and those big,
soft brown eyes of complete trust and love. That was my Min.
