Optional Rules for Characters Improving Skills during the Candidate Program

(Written for HERO, see notes at the bottom for other systems)

Each week the Candidates study 6 subjects, and the player should prioritize which subjects their character will be focusing on, ranking them from 1 (main focus) or 6 (almost ignored). At the end of each week of study of that subject, the player can make an INT roll (DEX for Physical Training or Suit Training) for each subject at a minus equal to half it’s rank.

For example, say my first week’s priorities were:
1 Physical Training
2 Suit Training
3 Tactics and Teamwork
4 Social Psychology
5 Ethics
6 History of the Cluster

Then my rolls would be:
Physical Training: DEX-1
Suit Training DEX -1
Tactics and Teamwork INT -2
Social Psychology INT -2
Ethics INT -3
History of the Cluster INT -3

If I succeed in this roll, I get 1 Character Point towards that Skill, if I fail I get ½ a point towards a skill related to that subject. A critical failure gets 0 points, and a Critical Success gets 1½ points.

Physical Training would be a point towards a 5point Hand to Hand Combat Skill Level, and Suit Training would be a point towards a level with Flight. The others would mostly translate to Knowledge Skills (ie KS: Social Psychology, KS; History of the Cluster) or whatever was deemed important.

Each weekend the characters are also allowed to do an “extra credit” assignment related to one of their classes that week, which is followed by an INT roll to complete successfully. If they succeed they nullify the minus from the prioritizing for that week about that subject. (ie If I choose to do my Extra Credit project on History of the Cluster, and make the INT Roll to do it, having put the time into it, I then can make my roll to learn “History of the Cluster” that week at -0 instead of -3.) However, this can only be done for one course each week, and does not apply to Physical Training or Suit Training.

Using this system, the most any character can “earn” towards any non-physical skill is 3CPs, and normally they should only get 2CPs. For Physical Skills they should top out at 9CPs, with a normal being 5CPs (enough for 1 5 point HTH CSL.)

Using the DC HEROS/MEGS system, characters could earn a maximum of 3 APs toward any skill, with an average of 2 APs learned. (Work in terms of APs, not Hero Points.)

Using the Interlock/Mekton System, characters would have a maximum of +3 to gain in any skill, with +2 being average.
