The Tang Family: Headed by “Old” Tang Hua-Sung, they specialize in textiles, own several restaurants.

The Feng Family: Headed by “Lazy Eye” Feng Xie-Lin, they run the major boating business along the river between NanJing and HangZhou.

The Jin Family: Headed by Madam Wen Mei-Hua, they run most of the local distilleries and the Seven Flower Pagoda.

The Meng Family: Headed by Meng Yu-Im, they own the major local flour mill.

HeiShou (Criminal) Underworld

The Water Rat Clan: Own most of the brothels on the West side of the city and control the city opium trade. Run by “Black Rat” Tang.

The Brotherhood of the Tiger: Own most of the brothels on the East side of the city, specialize in local slave trade. Run by “Winter Tiger” Wei

The Ghost Kings: An extortion syndicate who exploit money from the local merchants, also run several teams of pickpockets. Run by a group of 6 “Ghost Kings” who split up the city among themselves: Iron Ghost, Forest Ghost, River Ghost, Sparking Ghost, Flying Ghost and Whispering Ghost.

The WuXia (Jiang Hu) Underworld

The Black Flower Society: Chapter Headed by “Iron Heart” Kang. Freelance mercenaries and bodyguards.

The Sea Dragon’s Sons: Chapter Headed by “Smiling Crocodile” Jin. They specialize in guarding shipping.

The Society of the Winter Plum: Headed by “Abbot” Sam. Mercenary Farmers.

The Brotherhood of the White Sword: Headed by “Lady” Lu. Mercenary swordsmen.

The Saints of Mount Cloud: Chapter Headed by “Scholar” Xiu. An order of taoist warrior-scholars.

The Six Palms Bodyguard Agency: Headed by Master Chou.

The Peaceful Road Bodyguard Agency: Headed by Master Qi

The Golden Archers Bodyguard Agency: Headed by Mistress Lang

The Cult of the Harevst Moon: A shadowy assassins guild.

The Cult of the Holy Maiden of Mount Sun: A cult who worship their “Holy Maiden” who they believe is a goddess in human form come to cleanse the world of corruption. (Which includes established religions like Buddhism and Taoism.)

The Green Lotus Society: A loose organization of anti-Qing groups who work to disrupt the Manchus.


Noteworthy Others:

Lady Hua Mei-Mei: Mistress of the “Loving Arms” Brothel, the city’s most famous.
Miss Rose: The #1 cortesean at the Loving Arms, also a singer and poet of some note.
“Cracked Fingers” Yuan: Master of the “Shining Temple” Opera House.
Kwan Gei: Master of the Seven Flowers Drinking Pagoda, perhaps the most connected man in the city.
Doctor Kan Jie-Han: head of the “Eternal Springs” Clinic which helps provide traditional medicine to the common people of the East end of the city.  (Also a rumoured to be a martial artist of some note, has a small cadre of assistants who have proven their combat skills and desire to protect the weak.)
