He is as much a staple of Chinese adventure stories as the Knight, the Cowboy, the Samurai and the Swashbuckler are of the stories of other lands. Bound by his codes of honor and brotherhood, he has given up the traditonal communal life of China to seek out something else. Perhaps he is a dreamer, perhaps he is a second son with no future, perhaps he is merely bored, in any case, where he goes, trouble will follow... |
| Every culture has their adventure stories, and the Chinese are no exception. Dating back to the early days of the empire, they have had a rich culture filled with larger than life heros, but the modern concept of the Xia is perhaps only a hundred years old. He is a creature of newspaper serials, just the same as pulp heros once ruled the papers and magazines of North America. The Chinese lived and breathed WuXia stories, and thousands of them were written well into the modern age. Even today, many TV shows and movies are done about the Xia, from the current Jin Yong epics running on CCTV in China to movies like HERO and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and more shows than anyone except the greatest WuXia Pian afficondo has heard of. They are a heroic storytelling tradition that has captivated almost 1/3rd of the planet's population, and yet remain largely unknown outside of a handful of "Kung Fu" movies that seem to slip into North America from time to time. There is so much there, so much waiting to be tapped...and this website is devoted to helping those new to the genre to start their journey into learning the true nature of the Xia. |
| In addition to being a general site about the WuXia genre, this site is also about WuXia gaming in general. Mostly, it is my own attempt to make a source-material site that other GMs can make use of if they want to take a hand at running in this amazing world. I found much of this material in my researches as I planned my own WuXia campaign using the HERO System (thus the title of the site), but this site is really intended to function as a site for WuXia gaming period, not just HERO specific materials. With a little luck, you will enjoy using this material as much as I have, as my campaign has been nothing but a blast to run. |
