The 704th Tactical Airlift Squadron was redesignated the 704th Tactical Fighter Squadron on 1 July 1981 after completing its conversion from "ER" tailcoded C-130B Hercules to "TX" tailcoded F-4Ds. Based at Bergstrom AFB, Texas, and coming under the 924th Tactical Fighter Group , 301st Tactical Fighter Wing.
704th TFS exchanged its LORAN equipped Pave Phantom F-4Ds for F-4Es in 1989.
