We'll never forget the first time we saw Evelyn's house when Eva interviewed to be Evelyn's live-in caretaker position back in January 1999. The clutter and smell of literally years of neglect overcame us. So called adopted cats had moved in, clawed up, and smelled up what was once a charming home. We made it VERY clear how undignified it was for anyone to live in such filth. Eva accepted the position on the condition that Arlene (Evelyn's niece and power of attorney) would provide everything needed to clean up, repair, and restore the dignity and charm of Queen Evelyn's Palace of 80 years. |

Well, Arlene has been VERY generous with Evelyn's money in providing not only materials but professionals to do the jobs that Gordon couldn't. Since January 1999, we have accomplished the following indoor projects: |

Renovated what is now Alicia's Bedroom Removed wood paneling and FOUR layers of wallpaper uncovering drywall which needed MAJOR repairs including uncovering & repairing a 14" crack in the soil pipe from the upstairs toilet. Added two new electrical outlets.

Repaired and painted Florida Room pink w/ white woodwork to cover a mustard gold that was so ugly we wouldn't move any furniture in the room until it was done. Also installed electric phone outlets for the computer.
Remodeled Bathroom Installed new vanity & faucet (to replace a disintegrating vanity), linen tower, paint, major repairs to wall around tub, hand shower & grip bar for Evelyn. Had to hire a plumber to snake out the sink drain and replace the tub drain w/ new PVC (even the plumber couldn't unclog THAT drain!)
Hung drapes throughout some of ours, some of Evelyn's, some of Arlene's. Also hung mini-blinds in our bedroom and living room. None of the windows had any coverings except a roll shade here & there.
Textured Living Room Ceiling Didn't turn out too bad but next time we'll use the RIGHT materials!
New Wall to Wall Carpet Chris removed & disposed the cat piss impregnated carpet and Eva used an industrial deodorizer on the floors. Had to repair a section of termite damaged floor in our bedroom prior to laying new carpet. Of course, we had to have the whole house treated for termites after THAT scare. They also installed the same wall to wall carpeting in the upstairs apartment.
Replaced Electric Baseboard Heaters Several heaters were rusted out so bad from cat piss that a live wire shorted in the living room unit!
Painted hallway Instead of removing the paneling like we did in our bedroom, we simply spackled over it and painted it with a homemade concoction of various paints lying around the house. It turned out OK.
Repaired Upstairs apartment Lots of repairs although none due to neglect by the tenant who moved out shortly after we moved in. Repaired kitchen & bathroom floor; replaced bathroom vanity, faucet, and floor; repaired wall around tub; installed two ceiling fans w/ lights including running new wiremold; repaired windows, stove, and closet doors. Painted some woodwork.
OTHER INTERIOR REPAIRS Too numerous to list Including cleaned out basement for usable storage; repaired every major appliance but eventually replaced the washing machine and refrigerator; relocated washer & dryer to basement including ALL hookups; replaced or repaired cat damaged doors. |
