Rush County Players are ‘Rockin' Back the Clock’
Starr Shuppert

If you remember all those great songs of the 1950s, ‘60s and ‘70s, but can’t locate the old vinyl albums or eight-track tapes that helped you get your groove on during those decades, the Rush County Players are here to entertain you this weekend. With a cast of over 30 vocalists and a 10-piece band, the players will salute American Bandstand. The opening night show will take place at 8 p.m. Friday at Rushville Elementary School.

Tickets are available at Carter Lanning Paint and Wallpaper, 120 W. Third Street, Rushville. They’ll also be available at the door prior to each performance.

“We have really been anticipating our big opening night, and look forward to continuing this great show on Saturday, also at 8 p.m.,” she said. Locchetta noted that tickets are $6 for adults in advance, and $7 the day of the show. Students can obtain tickets for $4.

Director Becki Paul, along with Locchetta and producer Chante’ Wells, have selected a wide variety of songs to represent the 30 year period, from the early days of rock-n-roll to the end of the disco era.

“We have tried to not only choose bands or individuals who appeared on American Bandstand, but those who really represented the music of the era. If we had included all the acts and the songs we really wanted to, this show could have gone on forever!” Paul said. “We tried to narrow our choices to some really important acts.”

In addition to Elvis and the Beatles, early influential rock acts like Bill Haley and the Comets, Jerry Lee Lewis, Bobby Darin, the Big Bopper and many, many more will be represented during the show. The Players will also recognize the ‘60s with groups like the Beach Boys, the Mamas and the Papas, Tommy James and the Shondells, Sonny and Cher and more. Appearing as part of the ‘70s music scene are songs from Three Dog Night, the Eagles, Elton John, the Bee Gees, and others.

Music director Marvin Rees has worked with the band to capture the rockin’ feel of all this great music. Singing these great hits are RCP favorites Bill Craven, Janet Foster, Keith and Yvonne Holliday, and Mark Sloan, as well as newcomers Brandon Wagoner, Vanessa Holbert, Linda Daubenspeck and Mike Alexander.

“This show is being presented at Rushville Elementary School because we want to try to recapture the feel of a ‘50s malt shop, or teen hangout,” Wells said. “We will have seating at tables instead of regular theater seating, and will be serving soft drinks and snacks. The cast will even enter the audience to dance and interact with show-goers. So, don’t be surprised if you are asked to dance during the show! We also want to invite audience members to get up and dance to the music. After all, this is a show for the whole family and we want everyone to have a great time!”

To add to the fun each evening, there will be a costume contest for the best ‘50s outfit, the best ‘60s outfit and the best ‘70s outfit. So, put on your dancing shoes, your poodle skirts, your letter sweaters, or your leisure suits and join the Rush County Players as they “Rock Back the Clock” Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Rushville Elementary School.
