Page 5 PRAISE / PRAYER

Praise: We are glad that the Luckmans arrived safely in Addis
Ababa on Friday, November 2. Since a war was on in Egypt, the
Ethiopian Airlines wasn't operating in Cairo for a while but
praise the Lord they got on the last plane.
Now that the rains have stopped we can play outside more.
We are thankful for that.
We are thankful that the washing machines which used to be
broken are now fixed.

Prayer: There is a fairly large sore on one of our horse's
back. We hope that it will get better soon.
Mr. Hay is planning to have a fence built around the
compound. Pray that we will be able to get enough money to
erect it.
We also need new floors in the schoolrooms. We have the
bottom boards on but we need some nicer ones to cover
the top. .........Murray Hodges

RUNAWAY HORSE

It was Saturday and nobody was riding Tommy or Tinker.
Jimmy Healy and I took them out to ride them. It was
about 3:00 as we galloped up a hill. We galloped past thorn
bushes and ditches. Once we stopped in a field to chase
some cows. After that we galloped up another hill and I
thought we would keep on going but we stopped at the top of the
hill, turned around, and galloped down again. As we were going
down Jimmy warned me to push on the mane. After the warning I
found out why. I started bouncing up on the horse's neck and my
legs began to get awfully sore.
At the bottom of the hill we turned off into a path into
the woods. In about five minutes I began to get careless
and I fell off Tinker. Getting up from the ground and not
thinking what else to say I yelled, "Help, Jimmy. Catch that
horse!" Jimmy turned around and caught Tinker. I caught up
with them and stopped to catch my breath. After a while I
tried to climb up on Tinker's back but I fell down again.
Tinker started off again and if it had not been for Jimmy
holding onto the rains Tinker would have been loose again.
I had to walk along beside Tinker all the way to school.
And that was my first tumble. ........ Norman Coppola

A HUNTING GAME

Do you know what Stevie and I do sometimes at Banjang?
We like to pretend we're hunting ont he airstrip. Stevie
has a little toy rifle and I have a broken B-B gun. It
used to work and I shot hawks with my Father but that was
a long time ago. We take the guns and go out on the airstrip
Oh, but we have the best fun. There is grass on both sides
of the airstrip. We sneak through the grass and then we
pretend we are shooting an animal. Then we play like we take
the animal home and eat it. Stevie and I do it quite a lot.
I do it about three times a day. I think it is one of our best
games at Banjang. ...... Jimmy Faulkner

A DEAD MAN

Do you know what happened ten or eleven years before we went
to Burji? A man down there got sick and he gave all he had to
the witchdoctors but they said he would die. He died and then
they tied him to the coffin. While they were washing his
blanket he was dreaming and his dream was that the Holy Spirit
was saying that if he held the book tight to his heart he
would send his angel to bring him alive again. The book was the
After he came back to life he cried, "Let me go." There were
some people int he house who were frightened and ran away.
Some of the braver ones came back and untied him and he wasn't
buried. ...... Bruce Fellows

THE FUNNY AIRPLANE

Do you know what happened one time? I jumped into an airplane
and flew up into the sky. I was not a very good pilot and I
crashed. Before I crashed I pulled one of the propellers
and pulled it off. It was still going. I flew a little ways
and then I went down and I was killed.
                                        ...... Murray Black

OUR KITTY

We have a little pet kitty. She is very cute too. My
little sister has a lot of fun playing with her. Her name
is Kadees because that is the Maban for cat. One day Connie,
my little sister, went into the living room where Kadees was
sleeping. She tried to wake Kadees up but she would not
wake up. So Connie grabbed her by the neck. Then I think
you know what happened! Kadees got mad and started to
scratch her. That should have taught Connie a lesson but
Connie is still a bit mean to Kadees........ Jehnana Balzer

MY FAVORITE PET

My favorite pet is Rex. He plays with all the other
children and he plays with me. All the children have fun with
him and so do I. I like Rex to pull the chicken's tails but
the chickens don't. He whines at night because the other
puppies are gone. ...... John Healy

LINDA AND MURRAY

One day, in a far away land, there were two little children.
They were twins. Their names were Linda and Murray.
Linda and Murray lived with their parents in a nice little
house near a river. It was a nice river with goldfish
in it. On the other side ofthe river there was a forest.
Beside the house was a garden. The twins like to play in it.
One day the twins were playing in the garden when all of
a sudden they heard a noise in the air. They looked up and
saw a fairy. The said, "Mother, Daddy, loo-look at that
fa-fairy. Wha-what's she doing here?"
"I've come to tell you news," said the fairy. "Listen. Your
Aunt Mary has a baby. She will come to you at four o'clock
this afternoon. It is very cute."
After they had seen the baby they said, "It's very nice.
We wish it was ours."
We can bring our house over here. It is on wheels. So they
brought it over and they lived happily ever after.
                                  ...... Carolee Hodges

FOOTBALL

We started playing football by passing the ball to one
another. Then someone said we should tackle the boys so we did.
It was lots of fun but we got lots of bangs and cuts. Sometimes
we decided to play keepaway. When one boy got the football he
would run down the field to the backstop. Then he would have a
goal. One day we played that if you sat on the ball you had six
points. If you threw the ball at the backstop and it hit the
backstop you would have two points. Sometimes Mr. Wallace comes
out and plays with us. Sometimes we get mad at each other
because someone tackled to hurt or someone pulled on his shirt.
It is fun playing football even if we hurt ourselves.
After a while we stopped playing football and played baseball
because we were going to have a baseball game with H. Q.
But after the game was over we played football again and we
are still playing football.
One time two boys had a crash-up. One boy had the ball and
was running at top speed. Two other boys were going to tackle
him but he was going too fast and the other boys had a crash.
                                    ...... Dennis Ratzlaff

BICYCLES

Riding bicycles is a lot of fun. We used to ride them every
day. We would go all around the place. A lot of us children have
our own bicycles but the ones who don't ride some bikes
that belong to the school Now most of the bikes have something
wrong with them. Mr. Hay took the bicycles downtown to
a repair shop two or three times. Now we play games rather
than ride bikes.
The Boy Scouts had a "Bike Hike" a few weeks ago.
                                    ...... John Tomlinson

HOCKEY

As you know there is no ice in Ethiopia. Therefore the
only kind of hockey we can play is ground hockey. We got a
rubber ball, hockey sticks, and chose teams. We worked against
each other and tried to get the ball into the other team's
goal. It was nothing new to be hit on the shins or on the head
with a flying stick but it was still fun.
                                ...... Howard Brant

Miss Ora J. Brixey has been appointed to the staff of B.A. as of
the Council Meetings in November.

Mis Brixey had "Dermantitus" but she is much better now.

All girls who did not have to stay in bed because they had had a
mustard plaster went on a hike with Aunt Phyllis, Mrs. Hay, and
Miss Brixey on November 3.

The October birthday party and the Halloween party were combined.

Both Mr. and Mrs. Hay will be leaving in January for America.
Of course Helen and Jim will be going with them. We wish them
God's blessing as they travel homeward, and pray they may
have a blessed time as they spend their year in the Homeland.
May God grant them a rich spiritual ministry.

Members of the American Mission will be here at B.A. for their
annual conference, the first week(s) of December.

Mr. and Mrs. E. Tomlinson are leaving in December to go back
to Canada, because of the sickness of Stephen. We pray the Lord
will watch over them and heal this sickness.

Mr. & Mrs. J. Luckman, Evangeline, and David arrived in November
from America.

All of us are looking forward to our three month holiday with our parents.

HOME AGAIN!

On our way home to America we first flew to Cairo and
then my sister and I went on to Athens, Greece, while my
Father and Mother went to the Holy Land. We met them in
Athens the next week. Then we flew to Rome, Italy, where we
stayed for a few days. From there we flew to Zurich,
Switzerland, where we were for about a week and we went to the
Black Forest in Germany for about a day. We then took a
plane to Paris where I did not enjoy our stay very much. We
then flew to London where we all enjoyed it very much. We
went to Piccadilly Square and saw a lot of the sights as we
did in other countries as well. We stayed in London for
quite a while and then we took a bus trip to Southampton
where we boarded the R.M.S. Queen Elizabeth which was very
nice. We played quite a few games on board and on one night
there was a party for the children. We were given pins of
either the Queen Elizabeth or of a ship's wheel with the name
of the ship written on it.
The ship had its own theater, chapel, stores, swimming
pools, fire station, bar, lounge, library, telephones, and
many other remarkable things. It had a special Jewish tabernacle
and places for most religions to worship.
When we arrived in New York which we were all excited
about, we met my brother Stewart. We then went to Chicago
and out to Weaton where one of my uncles is a teacher of biology
at the Weaton College and Seminary. Then my sister and Stewart
stayed with my uncle while I went with my parents to
Denver, Colorado, for our annual conference. We were in
Denver for one week and then we went back to Minnesota where
we bought a house and settled because Stewart had been going
to school there and we knew the John Johnsons who were former
teachers at the secondary school here in Addis Ababa. We
lived in Anoka just about twenty miles north of Minneapolis.
While we were there the State hospital for the
mentally ill, there were two people in one week who escaped
and drowned in a river. One was a man and one was a woman.
We came back to Ethiopia on the Cristiphoro Colombo, an
Italian boat, and had the privelege of stopping in Gibralter
and going inside the tunnels inside the Rock of Gibralter.
We arrived in Naples eight days after we left New York and
went directly to Rome. Then we flew to Tripoli and then to
Khartoum. From Khartoum we flew to Adenand then finally to
Addis Ababa. And I am glad to be back ...... David Luckman

CHLOE'S CUT

Our family was riding in my Grandpa's car. We were going
to get on an airplane to Africa. As we neared the airport
my Grandpa jerked on the brakes. My sister Chloe fell
frontwards and bumped her head on something. She started to
cry. The cut on her head began to bleed and it bled and bled.
The blood ran all over my Grandma's coat. My Mother got lots
of Kleenexes to catch the blood. We wondered how we could
stop it. When we got to the airport we went to a nurse. She
put a bandage on her head and the bleeding stopped.
                                ...... Gayle Swart

OUR PUPPY DOGS

Do you know what happened one day? I don't think you could
ever guess. We were just ready to go on a picnic when we
heard a little squeaking noise. We didn't stop to see what it
was but we went on the picnic. When we came back we looked to
see what it could be. It came from under the couch and it was
our dog with a whole lot of puppies. We were suprised! We
made them a house and took them outside. ...... Jewel Wenger

A PICNIC

One bright day we went a picnic. We drove along the road
until our Daddy stopped. He wanted to see how the gun worked.
After a while we came to the river and stopped there.
We hiked around a little. Toward evening we saw some hippopotami.
After a while we saw them. We wished they would come up on
the shore. Soon we decided to go home. ...... Margaret Wenger

THE HALLOWEEN PARTY and BIRTHDAY PARTY

Wednesday, October 31, we had the Halloween and the October
birthday party. Mr. Kruger came after school and showed
us some pictures. After supper we got dressed up in some
old clothes and masks and went to the library for the parade.
The children who dressed up looked funny. I had a long
hooked nose on my mask. Some of the children and grownups
were guessers. If they guessed any of the children the had
to sit down. If some of the children were not guessed they got a
chocloate bar. After that we went outside and ducked
for apples and oranges and ate doughnuts. Some of the
children got their heads very wet. After we went inside and
had pumpkin pie and sponge cake. We had fun.

MY BOY DOLL

I love boy dolls. Once I got one for Christmas that
Mother made. I loved Jack so much that I could not leave
him alone. I slept with him every night and I even brought him
to breakfast. But one day his arm came off. I put him in
Daddy's drawer. I forgot all about him. Then one day I remembered
him and sewed his arm on. I was happier than ever.
Now my sister who is at home while I am here at school is
playing with him. I am sure when I come back I will have to
sew on an arm or a leg or even his head. ......Marcia Gordon

AN ESCAPE

Once when I was about one or two my Mother put me outside
right after rest hour. She put me in a little play pen. Then
she went to work. A little while later she heard a loug
scream from me. She ran out to the see what was the matter. When
she came out she saw a mad dog coming near me. She told my
Father and he got his gun and shot it...... Marguerite McMillan

A NARROW ESCAPE

I shall never forget one thing that happened to Faith and
me. While we were riding our bikes down the Massawa Road
some boys jumped out at us and told us to give them our bikes.
We didn't want to, but we didn't know what to do. They decided
they didn't want my bike because the tires wouldn't last
as long as Faith's They tried to take hers but we rode away when
they weren't looking. They ran after Faith with their
canes and gave her a blow on the back. We rode our bikes
fast to get home and get out of that place. I felt as if I
never wanted to go there again. ...... Becky Meckes

OUR CHUG

Our Daddy made a car. He put in a steering wheel. When we
want to play with it one person gets in it and the others
push. The one inside steers wherever he wants to go. We went
up to a stone pile. After we got up there we started to come
down. About half down a bull came. mark and I got so
afraid that we ran through the bushes. Daniel and Howard
coasted down the hill. ...... Philip Perkins

THE CHASE

One day in Aden on the three month holiday a cat came
into our yard. Kim, our dog, chased the cat around. All at
once the cat jumped up on the side of the stone house which
was ours and started to climb it. Then Kim came up the
and barked at her. Then she took a great big jump, hit the
ground, and kept on running until she was out of the yard.
                               ...... Charles Maxson

PLAYING WITH HOWARD

Sometimes Philip and I go to play with Howard over at
his house. Sometimes we climb trees. There is a big tree
in Howards's yard. We climbed up it.
One time when we were back from Howard's house Philip
and I were unwinding the rope from my Father's generator
when Philip fell on the generator. When he got up he had
burned his leg. I had to go and tell my Father so he would
shut the generator off. When we had fixed the burn up I
went over to play with Howard again but Philip had to
stay behind. ...... Mark Perkins

THE SHOELACES

One day Mr. Hay went to get some shoelaces but there
weren't any. A little later a package came but we didn't
bother to open it right away. When we opened it what do
you think we found? Why we found a whole bushel of
shoelaces. ...... Marilyn Reimer

A POOR MOUSE

When I went to Dembi Dollo a funny thing happened. Gerd
caught a mouse. He wanted to keep the field mouse for a pet.
My Daddy said to give him to the cat. The cat took the
field mouse by the collar until the field mouse was dead.
Then the cat ate the mouse. She had a nice dinner.
                               ...... Rolf Rohm

THE DRUNK MAN

One night a drunk driver was driving down the road. He fell
asleep while he was driving. After a little while he came to a
bridge. After his truck had crossed the bridge it turned off
the road and went headfirst into the river. One lady was
knocked out and her jaw broken. One man fell out of the truck.
A tire fell on him. One day when we were driving down the road
we saw something like a boat but it was the truck we have been
talking about. We stopped the car and went down to see what had
happened to the truck. A few days later we saw the man
and asked him all about it. ...... Ruth Tomlinson

Cub Scouts meet every Monday from 5:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M.
The Boy Scouts meet on Thursday from 5:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M.
At least once a month the Cubs and Boy Scouts go on a
hike but sometimes the rain interferes.
The last hike the Boy Scouts went on was a bicycle hike.
We left at 9:00 A.M. and went out towards Ambo by way of Addis
Ababa. At 11:00 A.M., we stopped to eat an orange.
Then we turned around and came home by way of a trail off
the road by Windgate School. ...... Van Schmidt

THE BALL GAME

On Friday, November 2, we had a holiday. We had made
arrangements for some people from Headquarters to come here
and have a ball game with us.
About 3:30 they came, had tea, and began to play. The
first inning ended with the score of Visitors 3, Bingham 9.
The second, Visitors 11, Bingham 12. The third, Visitors 16,
Bingham 16. On the fourth inning the Visitors stayed the
same while Bingham had gone up ten points to make the
score 16 to 26. The score for the fifth inning was 25 to 28,
Bingham in the lead. The last inning ended with 26 to 37.
Bingham had won.
We here could wee that most of the players on the Visitors
team weren't trying. I am sure that each of us enjoyed the
game very much. ...... Howard Brant

THE HALLOWE'EN PARTY ...... R.Ratzlaff

The Hallowe'en Party began when Mr. Kruger came on Oct.31,
from Haile Selassie 1 Secondary School with some moving
pictures. We saw a picture on Scotland, one on England, one
called Trooping of the Colour, and one on the Transporation
of Canada since early days. This one was rather amusing. We
saw two pictures before supper. The older children saw one
after the party when the rest of the children were in bed.
The first thing in the party was when all the children came
through the living-room wearing crazy clothes. A few of us tried
to guess them. Those who were not guessed got a chocolate bar.
After that we who wanted to, ducked for apples, tangerines,
an oranges. All of us had a chance to get a doughnut off a
string. These were tied tot he clotheslines.
We then went inside and had the birthday side of the party.
We had ice-cream, and a spngy cake that Mrs. Kruger had made.
The party was a lot of fun, and all of us unjoyed it.

The October Birthday Party ...... John Zabel

Mr. Kruger kindly came and showed us pictures. After
that we went into the dining room for the Party.
The ones who had birthdays in October, sat at one table,
while the rest of us sat at the other tables.
We had pumpkin pie, and marshmallow cake.
After we had finished we went to bed.

How rapidly time flies especially for us all
who are in our Lord's service. It seems but a
short time since we were newly arrived back on
the field after our first furlough faced with the
task of completing our new home and moving the
school to the new God given location.
The past five years have been busy and blessed
beyond our fondest expectations. All glory to our
God who has supplied all our need and answered
prayer of so many in behalf of this work. That
which God has done for Missionary Children here at
Kwolfi is the result of much prayer and sacrifice
on the part of missionaries and homeland friends.
Our friendship and home life with all you young
folk, members or our large family, have been a
heart warming experience. It has been a privilege,
any benefit which we may have been to you. As our
ways part now for a time we commit every one to
our Lord's care. Our prayer and heart interest
continue with you and our fellow workers.

WINTER TIME

Winter time comes full and swift,
When all the world seems adrift,
You must admit its lots of fun,
To coast and jump and skate and run

ELETELEPHONY

Once there was an elephant,
Who tried to use the telephant,
No, no! I mean an elephone,
Who tried to use the telephone.
Dear me! I'm not certain quite,
That even now I've got it right,
Howe'er it was he got his trunk,
Entangled in the telephunk,
The more he tried to get it free,
The louder buzzed the telephee,
I fear I'd better drop this song,
Of elephoo and telephong.

A PUPPY DOG

I wish I were a puppy dog, a roly, poly one,
I think I'd have a lot more fun, Than if I weighed a ton

THUNDERBOLT
Thunderbolt has gentle eyes,
Which view the earth with soft surprise,
He shies at every dog that barks
With ears like startled question marks.

He's just a colt with wobbly knees,
But Thunderbolt tries hard to please,
As though the meadow big and wide,
He staggers at his mother's side.

He's just a colt my Thunderbolt,
A tiny flash, no thunderbolt,
But sometime in the future dim,
His name won't be too big for him.
