In 1993 it had looked as though the Pullmans were headed for the scrap heap. Knowing that Michigan Island would have another transit line and need additional cars, the CTA embarked on an overhaul project that would give these fragile cars a second lease on life. One hundred cars were marked for body reconditioning, new motors, advanced electrical systems. These cars were subsequently reclassified as the 2000 mkII. The cars were placed in service on the Rickover Line.
Their performance was much improved as they went from has-beens to reliable transit vehicles. The cars inaugarated service on the Interloop line, providing a vital link with Chicago, and were the sole service provider for years until the 7500's arrived. They still serve on all Michigan Island lines except the Eastman.
