Tau Tales ~ Fall 2001 |
Letter From the President Larissa Doran Congratulations to the sisters of Eta Tau on your remarkable achievement. No one could have expected, though many had hoped for the news we received on September 25th. We started the evening innocently as we enjoyed the music of the Air Force Strings. It was a remarkable concert. Thank you to our Province Officer Deb Volker and all the Air Force Strings for such a fun and beautiful performance. After the concert was our real surprise! The sisters gathered together for a reception where Deb presented Telena Seal (2001 graduate) with the Ruby Sword of Honor. This we expected, though she was surprised. Then, to the surprise of all, Yasuko Miyata was presented with the National College Treasure’s Award! But this was not the end. Christy Hopkins, the president for 2000-2001 was called forward and received for us the Iota A Province College Chapter Achievement Award. Before she could get away, the biggest surprise of all—Eta Tau for the 2000-2001 school year earned the National College Chapter Achievement Award! Our tears of joy flooded the room. Just think, only two years after we first received the ward and both in our 10 short years of existence. Sisters, I am so proud of you. Even with such an excellent year behind us , you continue to change and grow to be even better. I encourage you to keep growing, not to beat our old record, but to be our best for today. Bay View Music Festival Jessica Medina Jessica Medina, a soprano, participated in the Bay View Music Festival in Petoskey, Michigan from June 14 till August 12, 2001. Located on the shore of Lake Michigan this music festival is designed for undergraduate and graduate student performers who wish to further their musical experience. Jessica was chosen to join sixteen other singers from across the United States to perform the role of “ZERLINA” in a student production of W.A. Mozart’s opera “DON GIOVANNI.” sides doing the opera, students are enrolled in classes of their choice ranging from Music Theory to Performance Practice for Singers. All conservatory students are also required to participate in the Bay View Festival Chorus and to take private applied voice lessons throughout the summer. This festival also gives the students opportunities to participate in Master Classes with renowned teachers and groups such as George Shirley, tenor and the Back Aria Group. This festival also holds opportunities for instrumentalists as well as anyone who would be interested should contact the Bay View Music Festival web site at www.bayviewassoc.org. Sisterhood Report Emily Bishoff This year our chapter is initiating an event which with a little luck and enthusiasm throughout the chapter and the music department may become an annual occurrence. We all spend so much effort and time during the year giving to others, why not spend an evening of enjoyment for ourselves? Let’s break out those dusty dancing shoes and formal attire for a holiday formal full of sisterhood and holiday spirit! Tickets will go sale the first week of November and will continue throughout the month. More information will come later, but in the meantime be prepared to have some fun!!! Homecoming Amanda Funkhouser This year Sigma Alpha Iota will be honoring Dr. Seuss in the spirit of the Brazilian Carnaval. Through a lot of planning and hard work we will be able to have a fun and memorable week!! The events on the agenda this year for homecoming are skits, banners, academic bowl, a concert, pep rally, and the parade. So far we have captured third place in the skits competition. We used the different books by Dr. Seuss and integrated elements of the Shepherd College with a little sprinkle of Carnaval to kick off this year’s homecoming week. We are all excited to see what the rest of the week holds! I hope everyone enjoys this year’s festivities and makes the most of this week, especially you seniors and alumni. Love to all in SAI and have fun!! Service Report Sherri Haupt Greetings Sisters!!! I hope all of you had a wonderful summer. Now, time for some work. I would like to do some major service projects this year, but I need you help. If you have any ideas for service don’t hesitate to send them in and let me know. We have already started the ball rolling by donating $300.00 of our car wash money to the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. A total of $600.00 was raised at the car wash with Phi Mu Alpha and split equally between to two groups. Also to help in the relief efforts we will be putting together “Caring Gift Packages” for military personnel who have been shopped over seas. Our usual can food drive will take place around Thanksgiving and we will be putting together stockings for underprivileged children at Christmas. Next semester will involve helping with local band auditions and festival including the Solo and Ensemble Festival at Shepherd College in February. Please, if you have any ideas or need the current, active sisters assistance on anything let me know. Love in SAI to all!!! |
