Eta Tau Chapter is located at Shepherd College in Shepherdstown,  West Virginia and is a part of the Iota A Province of Sigma Alpha Iota, International Music Fraternity. "Eta Tau Tales" is the newsletter of Eta Tau Chapter and is published at least once per semester.  The newsletter was formerly called "Tau Tales" but was renamed to avoid being confused with the newsletter of another chapter.
Letter from the President
Sherri Haupt, EtaTau President
Greetings Sisters!!  I hope everyone is having a fulfilling semester.  I must say that being president is not at all what I expected.  I am very fortunate to be involved with such wonderful and talented women.  Though we all have very hectic schedules, we seem to find time to say "Hi," give a hug, or lend an ear.  I hope everyone continues to have a productive semester.  I love you all!
Meet the "M. I. T. s"
Members in Training for Spring Semester, 2003
Emily Bishoff, VP of Membership
Eta Tau proudly awaits the membership of our Spring semester "members in training" Colleen Raulf, Brigid Gaine, and Joanna Moomaw. This semester the girls have been working hard to learn information about the fraternity.  They plan to fix up the rose garden as their service to the chapter.  The rose garden is dedicated to the work of a past advisor to our chapter.
Colleen is a music education/ music performance major with a beautiful voice, Brigid is an elementary education major as well as manager to our own Shepherd women's softball team, and Joanna is a music theater major with a great talent. These girls all have a LOAD of potential. All my girls are wonderful and I will be proud to call each one of them my sister.
Spring Formal Dance is a Hit!
Emily Bishoff, Formal Committee Chairperson
Our chapter put on its second formal this year, March 15, at the historic Entler Hotel in Shepherdstown. Tickets were $10 per person, $18 per couple, and proceeds went towards our Shepherd Preparatory Program Scholarship.
This year we did things a bit differently and hired a DJ instead of our good friends in the jazz combo who played at last year's formal. We thought we'd compare the two outcomes for next year's shin-dig.
Thanks to all those who lent a hand and supported our cause.  Keep your ears and dancing feet primed for next year when EtaTau does it again!!!
"Fr. Ed." Fun for All
Erin Crum, Fraternity Education Chairperson
We have done all sorts of new things with Fraternity Education this year.  Our most recent fun was "Flash Dancin' National Objectives."  In this game, music is played while the group dances.  When the music stops, everyone freezes and a quiz question is asked about the national objectives.  This game will work well with any information that needs to be reviewed.  It went really well for us.  Everyone had a great time and it really gave some energy to our meeting.
Serving our Community
Emily Bishoff, Service Committee Chairperson
EtaTau finds it important to combine service with sisterhood.  This is why some of our main service projects center on our formal dance.  The proceeds from the formal's ticket sales are going to the Shepherd College Preparatory Program in the form of scholarship monies for less fortunate families who couldn't otherwise afford music lessons for their children.  Also, many of the dresses worn at the formal are going to be donated to The Glass Slipper Project, in DC.  This program provides dresses and accessories for girls who would never be given the chance to go to their prom otherwise.
This month we are also putting plastic bottle recycling cans throughout the Creative Arts Center to go with the Phi Mu Alpha brothers' efforts towards recycling aluminum cans.  A final sisterhood/service project may be in the works for the end of the semester: camping and cleaning trash!
Solo and Ensemble
Rachel Barb, Solo and Ensemble Chairperson
The Solo and Ensemble Festival was a great success.  Forty area students came to Shepherd to play and sing for our judges.  Fifteen performers were given a superior rating and were recommended to perform at the state festival.
Fun "Fr. Ed." Fact
Who is Elsa Gardner Stanley?
Although she was not a founder, she was a charter member.  She was born in Providence, Rhode Island and moved to Ann Arbor as a small child.  She was initiated as a charter member in October, 1903.  She was Alpha Chapter's second president.  She also established much of the ritual.
"I shall never forget with what quiet dignity she officiated, and I believe it is her beautiful spirit that has given to Sigma Alpha Iota an atmosphere surcharged with things beautiful," Nora Crane Hunt, 1928.
Little Shop of Horrors
Musical theater returned to Shepherd College after several years of absence.  Some sisters of Eta Tau took roles in the production.  The lead role of Audrey was played by Emily Bishoff who gave a remarkable performance.  Other cast and crew members were EtaTau sisters Liz Beck, Angie Flook, Kate Hartung, Jenny Jones, and Rachel Barb, and M.I.T.s Colleen Rolf and Joanna Moomaw.
Senior Recitals and Project Presentations
Christy Hopkins:  February 9, 2003
Christy conducted a wind ensemble concert for her Senior Project.  Along with her hours of score study and rehearsal, Christy prepared the Haydn Trumpet Concerto, movement 2 which she performed on her trumpet at the concert.  Many sisters performed in the ensemble or attended the performance as audience members.
Sherri Haupt:  March 2, 2003
Saxophone Recital
"It's over!!  I cannot tell you how much of a weight was lifted off my chest after four years of preparing for my senior recital.  Despite my being ill during the performance, I got the grade I needed to graduate!    I felt very special after the performance when I walked around the corner into a circle of sisters and heard a beautiful rendition of the SAI Chorale.  Thank you to everyone who attended."
Jenny Jones:  March 16, 2003
Jenny performed a very entertaining recital on her oboe.  Jenny played several solo pieces and performed ensemble pieces including oboes, English horn, oboe d'amour, and a tenor vocalist.
Larissa Elliott:  March 18, 2003
Larissa's project presentation was based on her experiment involving how the title of a piece of music affects the listener's perception of it.  The audience participated by drawing pictures while listening to recordings of classical music.
