THE FLEA MARKET |
I confess, I love browsing around flea markets (where do you think I find all my "stuff" - my doll finds - my treasures?) - and to show my appreciation of the flea market concept, this is my version - obviously far from finished, but getting there. |

This is the toy stall @ the "Village Green Flea Market". You will find an odd assortment of toys at this stall - most of them are previously owned toys, carefully washed and packaged, ready to be purchased for a new round of play. Starting from the top of the stall - I have a row of "flying objects" on the top row, you know aeroplanes, helicopters, etc - even a kite lying up there. The Hula Hoop is actually that ring that seals the lid of a cocoa container (in South Africa, they seal the Vitamin C enriched powdered cooldink tubs). I lined the "ceiling" of the stall with some strong coarse tulle and hung some of the toys from it - I made tiny S hooks from thin telephone wire. The back of the stall is lined with thin cork and I have "nailed" some pins into the cork to hang up some of the toys. The shelf is made from "Lego" bricks. Can you see that dinky little red & blue "Tupperware" ball? One day I am going to get round to making the little shapes to fit thru the holes. Some of the toys are Mattel brand toys, but mostly the items on the stall are from various nefarious and other places. And I made the two large toyboxes on either side of the photograph. I hand sewed every seam and glued on the Pooh Bear motifs. Perhaps someone can tell me more about the Barbie doll in the picture. When I lift her right arm, she giggles. What Barbie is she? The three little Kelly dolls were the only littlies I had at the time, but I have since acquired a black haired Kelly dressed in a Tinkerbell outfit. |

THE FLOWER STALL @ my daughter's school, her grade is required to present some sort of floral arrangement to grace the scholar's entrance for a week. As I am not one for floral arrangements, etc, we decided to make a flower stall and the photo on the left is what we did. We laid it out on a tray and carefully carted it off to school - I had to drive like a lady that morning. Final tidying up was done and then it was placed in its place of honor for the week. I was most impressed to find that not a single item was missing from the display - these things are not put under glass or anything The containers on top of the stall are an assortment of lids from various sources. My mom made the Macrame in the year dot - I was still a kid. The little seedling pots are Lego type bricks turned |
upside down - a little plastacine pushed in the little holes and a sliver of greenery makes a lovely little tray of seedlings. The books on the back were cut from magazine adverts. The flowers, etc are all artificial. Can you see the sack of compost. Eros sitting in a bowl, is actually a cake decoration. The box in front houses an assortment of tools from a "pick-up-sticks" game. The packets of seed were cut from magazine adverts. I think the doll is a baby-sitting teen skipper - maybe someone can help me out here. I intend to make other stalls - a fast food stall, a junk stall, a clock stall (to house a large assortment of Barbie sized clocks) and perhaps a haberdashery stall - a book stall or a stationery stall could also work. I will have to see how time and space permits. More ideas would be appreciated too. |
