MY NEW DOLL HOUSE |
I am currently building a brand new doll house. The idea for this doll house has been solely to satisfy my decorating whims. Unfortunately, I am too clumsy to make doll houses smaller than Barbie size - gracious, I even have trouble with this size sometimes. I don't know how many rooms this doll house is going to have - I did however, order enough material cut for 10 rooms - I have got three off the ground and am busy on the fourth one - the Kitchen. I will load photographs of each room as I am ready with them, but will endeavour to describe them as fully as I can in the meantime. THE LOUNGE - OUT OF AFRICA This room has a definite AFRICAN flair to it. The floor covering is natural sacking. 2 of the walls are painted a stone color and the back wall is covered with a rough-cast plaster effect in a slightly off white wallpaper and in the centre of the back wall is the brick fireplace with the rough-hewn wooden mantle piece. The furniture is the wooden furniture I won in the raffle (see Previous Page), but this time covered in a soft black velveteen fabric. The "copper" scatter cushions have line drawings of African Game on them. There is a large square zebra print rug on the floor under the coffee table. I framed four pictures of African Game with twig frames on a black background and hung them two one each side wall above the seating. Between the two armchairs is a large African drum covered with "Springbok" fur and leather and on this rests a silver and brass chess set - play in motion. Between the inner armchair and the fireplace, I have a "stuffed" (flocked plastic actually) Springbok standing in the corner looking out into the room - it is surrounded by other African birds - the blue crane and guinea fowl. The fireplace has a fire in the grate as well as some extra logs and pine cones in a coal scuttle alongside - and I even have the necessary fire irons in place. On the other side of the fire place, I have built a set of shelves to house my collection of miniature wood and ivory African animals as well as an assortment of African ornaments, pots, vases and grasses. At the moment Ken doll and Steven doll are sitting in the lounge discussing their recent sojourn into the bushveld, where they found an ancient arrow-head. They are enjoying a beer each and reading the newspaper article about their find. (Not in this Photograph) It took me forever to get this room the way I wanted it and at the end of the day, it still did not seem right - then I hung a curtain of zebra print chiffon accross the front of the room - this frames the room beautifully and finishes the whole thing off neatly. This is the only room I can safely say is totally complete - unless I find another ornament or something to put in it - or if I ever get round to electrifying the rooms. For those of you who are interested in the dimensions of the rooms - ALL the rooms are 40cm from floor to ceiling and 55cm from front to back. This room is 65cm from side to side. |
