What is FFXI:
FFXI is an MMORPG. The real name is Final Fantasy XI. Developed by Square Enix, it was the first Final Fantasy game to make an online debut. In Final Fantasy XI, you play the role of an adventurer in the mystical world called Vana'diel. There are five races to choose from and play with three different starting cities. As the story goes...
Long ago during the Crystal Era, hordes of Beastmen lead by the Shadow Lord attempted to take over Vana'diel. The Kingdom of San d'Oria, the Republic of Bastok, the Federation of Windurst, and the Grand Duchy of Jeuno all joined forces to face the Shadow Lord and his armies. Many fell but eventually the three nations under the guidance of Jeuno were able to push back the Beastmen and seal away the Shadow Lord. Eventually the three nations returned to their own and peace was restored. Rumors of war were always muttered under the breaths of the three nations as they began to struggle for power of territory. Twenty long years passed since that war and the number of adventurers has increased ten-fold. The Beastmen are beginning to stir and rumor is the Shadow Lord may return...
Originally Final Fantasy XI was released in Japan on the PC. Then after awhile it made its way to US shores. And then eventually the popular online RPG made its way onto the Sony Playstation 2 first in Japan, and now in the United States. Players of both systems can interact with each other and even with players from Japan. So far there is an expansion already bundled with the US version of FFXI for both PC and PS2 called "Rise of the Zilart". Recently FFXI even hit EU shores now with the new expansion "Chains of Promathia" included. So now players all over the world are connected in Square Enix's biggest game yet. "Chains of Promathia" takes place one year after the Zilart missions. Players don't even have to complete the first expansion to enjoy the second. Interest in the once proud nation of Tavnazia has slowly grown as this new threat of the "Emptiness" now takes its hold on Vana'diel. What really happened in that war over twenty years ago? Adventurers are now scrambling to the furthest reaches of Vana'diel to find out. In addition to FFXI there is the Playonline Viewer, a service offered by Square Enix that allows you to chat, share files, send e-mail, and everything else. From FFIX also comes the popular card game "Tetra Master" now in online form. Pick up your copy of FFXI if you haven't yet, you won't regret it!
