The Sand Eaters

Fish Count Page

During the Month of July, The Sand Eaters Participated in the Great American Fish Count, recording their observations of the fish population at Isie Cove-White Point, Palos Verdes, California.

The general consensus was spending time observing and identifying fish expanded the dive causing our divers to really take notice of what is around them.

Methodology:

Two basic objectives were met; a timed count rating and an abundance count. For the timed count, a ranking based on when a species was observed was created. Fish observed in the first 5 minutes of the dive receive a score of 10, new species observed in the next 5 minutes get a 9, the next batch 8 and so on.

We also noted the quantity of fish observed. The legend for abundance: S = Single, F = Few (2-10), M=Many (11-100), A=Abundant (100+).

Please note, a series of storms disrupted the counts from 10/97 - 5/98.
