'building a desert' review from Gods of Music
8.30 out of 10

Sans Arc are fantastic. Or make that is fantastic, seeing as this is all the work of one guy. I have a soft spot for one man projects as it is, but Craig has got this slo-fi business exactly right. A simple, repetitive guitar line is accompanied by an unobtrusive drum pattern and subtle synth work. You can't always make out the breathy lyrics, but that's ok because his voice is merely another instrument & it's the feeling of the song that matters here, rather than what's actually being said. This could almost be film score music, it feels endless, but in a good way, like it could go forever - a personal soundtrack. My only criticism is that after the break I was expecting something more to happen, possibly another interweaving melody line which doesn't appear...i know dynamics isn't really the name of the game here, but it would've added more to an already beautiful song. Sans Arc has all the makings of a cult band, a la Mogwai & it would be a real shame if this project doesn't achieve the recognition it deserves. One for fans of simple beauty and melancholy souls. - Chris Nicholls of Gods of Music (www.godsofmusic.com)
