1991, with the advent of the World Scrabble Championship (WSC).

In a referendum
held in 2000/01, SANSPA members voted by a two-thirds majority to allow
non-permanent residents to play in all future Nationals. Thus, from 2003 SA
Nationals is open to players from around the world!
