The South African National Scrabble® Championships

The South African National Scrabble Championships (known as "The Nationals") have been held since 1987, shortly after the formation of SANSPA.

The tournament was held biennially from 1987, but became an annual event after 1991, with the advent of the World Scrabble Championship (WSC).

In a referendum held in 2000/01, SANSPA members voted by a two-thirds majority to allow non-permanent residents to play in all future Nationals. Thus, from 2003 SA Nationals is open to players from around the world!
