TWELFTH CANOPY

Le Père François-Xavier Fafard o.m.i. parut pour la première fois chez les Cris de la Baie James en 1888; pour eux c'était "Sapier" qu'ils gardent encore en grande vénération.
 
C'est à l'été 1802 que Sapier vint planter sa tente à Fort Albany.

Missionnaire énergique, imposant, mais surtout guidé d'une pensée surnaturelle, il a porté une lourde croix quasi quotienne.  Il a souffert de la misère de son peuple, de voyages interminables à l'aviron et à la cordelle. Il a souffert les plus formidable légions de moustiques qui soient sur terre et dans les marécages.

Son aspostolat patient, amoureux de la croix, lui valut  les fruits merveilleux de solides conversions chez les Indiens et lui a assuré, par ailleurs, une place légendaire au catalogue des grands missionnaires.

Il a  été bâtisseur d'église et de chrétienté à Fort Albany, Fort Hope, Winisk et Severn.  Il pouvait témoigner de lui-même:  "Il n'y a peut-être pas un Oblat au monde qui soit plus en état de réaliser notre belle devise: Il m'a envoyé évangiliser les pauvres "

1686 In name of king Louis X1V of France, D'Iberville took over the Fort Englishmen of the area.
1713 The treaty of Eltrecht returns to England the territoies of Hudson Bay and James Bay.
1847 First visit of O.M.I. Fathers to Moosonee.
1892 Foundation with Strong Albany of the first permanent residence of a Catholic Mission by the father François-Xavier Fafard o.m.i.
1902 The Sisters of Charity of Ottawa Soeurs Gray of the Cross melt a hospital and a boarding school with Fort Albany.
1905 Signature of treaty no.9 between the Crown and the Indians.
1932 Moosonee connected by the railway. Oblats establish the headquarters of the Missions with Moosonee.
1939 Création by the le Saint Sits of the apostolic Vicariate of James Bay.
1940 Nomination of Mgr. Henri Belleau o.m.i., like first apostolic Vicar. Crowned bishop, it resides at Moosonee.
1947 Erection of the Cathedral of the Christ-King with Moosonee.
1964 Mgr. Belleau resings.  It is replaced by Mgr. Jules Leguerrier o.m.i.
1967 The apostolic Vicariate of the James Bay becomes the diocese of Moosonee. .
1987 Restoration of the Cathedral. Installation of the canopies.
1989 Fiftieth anniversary of the Diocese. Twenty five of episcopate of Mgr. Leguerrier.
1991 Resignation of Mgr. Leguerrier. Nomination of Mgr. Vincent Cadieux o.m.i., as bishop of Moosonee.
1992 Episcopal ordination in Moosonee of Mgr. Cadieux, march 29.
