Writing Fan Fiction
What is Fan Fiction?
Don't feel bad, when I became a newsie fan, I had no idea either and felt really stupid because everyone else seemed to know. I finally read a fan fic, and all it is is a story written by a Newsies fan like me or you using the characters from the movie and some of their own characters. Since the day I figured out what fanfics were, I've read and written many stories. I would recommend writing them to anyone, even if they don't think they're a good writer. It's really fun to post them on the internet and get feedback. Even if you don't have a website, I post any fan fiction people send to me, and many other sites do too.

Getting Started
I usually start with a character name. Think of a name you think is pretty spiffy, and then you have to start thinking about what he or she looks like, and what's going to happen to them, etc. STOP! Before you just name the character Kat or after yourself, I've put together a list of creative names that would be used in 1899. Feel free to use any of the names on this list.
Character Names
Once you have your name, just start writing. I never think of the entire plot before I begin, mostly just the basic situation and I go from there. Romances are fine, but they're more interesting when you throw in other conflicts. Try to be creative when coming up with your conflicts, because there are hundreds of fanfics with similar plots. To help you out, here's a few basic situations you can use for plots. Most of these have probably been used before, so feel free to use them in your story and elaborate on them all you want.
Story Plots
Once you think you've finished with your story, go back and re-read it to make sure everything makes sense. Give it to a friend to read. Getting feedback helps you improve your writing. If you have a website, post it for everyone to read. If not, you can go here to post it on my site, or search the internet for other websites that will let you post your stories on them.

Ooh, and just for fun, I decided to post the first fanfic I ever wrote, previously unpublished on my site (and for good reason). It's pretty bad, and proof that in writing among other things it is important to practice. Go ahead and read it if you want, it has a nice commentary from me pointing out funny mistakes I made with the plot or characters and stuff.
