Reports 2005 Second  Half Year

Report of Meeting held on Monday July 4, 2005.

On this, the first meeting of the second half-year program we had 27 persons turning up to hear Bill Ingrames from COTA National Seniors talk about Healthy Sleeping without the aid of drugs. And there proved to be many ways of doing this. And many of his audience had their own ways of achieving this result as well.

Report of SkyCity Lunch on Monday July 18, 2005.

Thirty persons turned up for this excellent all-you-can-eat smorgasbord lunch and everyone enjoyed it. Many trips were made backwards and forwards to the serving area for more of the great variety of foods available. As an added bonus everyone including the Action-card holders received a $2 pokie voucher, which made it a very cheap meal indeed. Of the 30 members present 21 had an Action card.

One of our members reported the death of Nell Mileham, formerly Ticket Clerk, eight months ago.

Report of Swan Reach Day-Tour on Friday August 19, 2005.

As everyone who had booked was on board early we left the Festival Theatre at 8.55 with 32 persons on board. The weather was not very nice with continuous showers. However once outside of the City it cleared and the rest of the day was mainly fine. We travelled via Inglewood, Chain of Ponds, Gumeracha, Birdwood and Palmer to Mannum for a comfort stop and a morning cup of tea/coffee. Then proceeded across the river by ferry taking the river road to Young Husband and Nildottie to reach Swan Reach by 12.00noon. An excellent lunch was had at the Swan Reach Hotel, which a real credit to the operators. We stayed there until 1.15 pm and then went to Walker Flat and crossed the river again by ferry. We travelled via Mt. Pleasant, Birdwood and Mt Torrens to Woodside and the Melba Chocolate factory. Always a favourite stopover it gets more interesting every time we visit it. The range of sweets is never ending and gets bigger all the time. Then via Balhannah to Ambleside to pay a quick visit to the Fruit and Vegetable market. Always a very extensive display of all kinds of produce for sale. The home journey was via the freeway arriving at the Festival Theatre 4.30 pm.

Report of Meeting held on Monday August 29, 2005.

On a glorious and sunny day, the warmest winter day for a decade with the temperature reaching 28 degrees, we only had a disappointing 19 persons turn up. The speaker for the day, Darren Garbin from HomeStart Finance, talked about the senior’s options for financing. Especially the Reverse Equity Loan, which was developed for seniors, so they could have much needed money now and repay when the property is sold. More information is available at 100 Pirie Street, Adelaide. Phone No. 8210 0500 or visit their web site at homestart.com.au.

We again had 31 persons turning up for our Meeting. This time including four visitors who had answered our call for new members in the Sunday Mail. Hopefully they are happy with what we do and perhaps come again soon. We love to see some new members. Our speaker for the day, Michael Porter from the Seniors Information Service, gave a detailed insight into the information available from their service. And it is very extensive. The popularity of today’s speaker, Cliff Olds, is so great we had 33 persons present at this meeting. This time he talked about his personal memories of a childhood in Moonta. Life was certainly different in those days. John Evans of Tourism SA was also present. He spoke about the upcoming Terowie reunion at the Port Dock Railway Museum.

Report of Winery Day-Tour on Friday October 28, 2005.
As we only had a small group today of 19 persons, Kevin brought out his smaller 32 seater Mercedes Coach. Leaving from the Festival Theatre at 9.00am we travelled to Gawler for a morning tea/coffee stop. In glorious weather we then travelled to Nuriootpa and visited the Wolf Blass winery with its very new Visitor’s centre. Money does not seem to have been spared building this well set-up Centre. We then visited the Chateau Dorrien. This is an older but well set out winery, which has a shopping gallery attached to it. A well-organised lunch was then had at the Tanunda Hotel. Chateau Barrosa (notice the different spelling) was next on the itinerary. We had a guided tour through the ballroom of the main building. This must surely be an insurance company nightmare as the items on display are so numerous and obviously so very valuable with many dating back many hundreds of years. The last one for the day was the Chateau Yaldara, always a good place to visit. We arrived back at the Festival Theatre by 4.30pm. A day enjoyed by all with many bottles of wine carried back to the city.

Report of Meeting held on Monday November 7, 2005.
We had 27 persons present on a very wet and windy day. The speaker for the day, Monica McGrath from COTA National Seniors, spoke about Falls Prevention and Mobility. And even if most of the suggestions were common knowledge for most members I noticed some members who learned something and that after all is what this is all about. Well Done Monica! The death was recorded of our member Ted Zaluski, formerly Marshaller at Islington, at the age of 82. He used to be a very regular attendant of our meetings and took part in many extended tours. A minute’s silence was held for the departed Member.

Report of Meeting held on Monday November 21, 2005.
We had 34 persons present to hear Jim Birmingham of the Office of Public Transport Active and Older Program talk about the Adelaide Public Transport System. And what a talk he did. He is almost a timetable on legs such is his knowledge of the many bus, tram and train routes. And he very efficiently answered the many questions thrown at him by his audience. A job very well done. We also said goodbye to one of our well-known members who passed away last week. He was Florian (Fred) Mydlak, formerly engineman Mile End, at the age of 84. Several of his Railway colleagues attended his funeral service.

Report of Christmas Lunch on Friday December 9, 2005.

At this, the last meeting for the year we had 34 persons taking part in this excellent 3-course Christmas Luncheon. And Frank and his Staff have again excelled themselves with the friendliest service, the most exquisite meal and the very efficient organization of the whole afternoon. We came to eat, and at no stage of the meal did we have to wait for the next part to arrive. Excellent organization. I can really recommend this venue to anyone who is looking for a worry-free deal.
And lastly I would like to wish everyone a very Happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year. We hope to see you again on Monday February 6, the first meeting for 2006.
