Reports 2006 First Half Year

Report of A.G.M. held on Monday February 6, 2006.
At the start of another year, this being the first meeting, we had 27 persons in attendance, which is three more than for the same meeting last. The Treasurer gave his annual statement, which proved to be in a very healthy state. The Secretary gave his annual statement the full content of can be read on the Secretaries report 2006 page. The president thanked everyone for their support during the year and invited our Patron Ron Fitch to the table. He re-instated the Committee for another year and made some remarks regarding trying for more membership even of non-railway persons if necessary. John Evans from the SA Tourism Commission who was also present talked about the upcoming re-union in Peterborough on the June long weekend. There seems to be a lot of interest in this and the Secretary is trying to organize a coach and accommodation for this event. Details will be announced as soon as they come to hand. Four members passed away since our last meeting. Norm Keith Hann, formerly Engineman at Gawler, aged 76. Jack Bradtberg, formerly Equipment Stores in Adelaide, aged 81. Merv Renshaw, formerly Traffic Instructor, aged 87 and Hilde Mydlak, wife of Fred (Deceased), aged 72. A minute’s silence was held for the departed members.

We again had 27 persons in attendance although not all the same persons. The speaker for the day, Felicity Alexander, came from the Adelaide City Council and talked about the Council Travel Smart Program. This is all about getting around Adelaide in its many forms from busses to bicycles and walking. See www.adelaidecitycouncil.com for lots of information. We welcomed one new member, the first for 18 months. We also said goodbye to 2 members who have passed away in the last 2 weeks. Them being Olive Gore, formerly Portress in Adelaide, at the age of 86 and Ted Evans, formerly Senior Officer at Keswick at the age of 78. The Secretary has also received confirmation of 3 more members who passed on some time ago, Jack Rowe, Ron A. Blowes and Ray Guerin. A minute’s silence was held for the departed members.

Report of Meeting held on March 6, 2006
With an audience of 31 persons present we heard Tony Elliott of Elliott Funeral Services talk about the (still unsolved) Mystery of the Somerton Beach Body. This has been an ongoing investigation since the body was found on the Somerton Beach on the morning of December 1, 1948. And after every scrap of available evidence has exhaustibly been investigated they are still no further in solving this mystery. Tony has an almost intimate knowledge of this case, as even his father was involved with it in the beginning. It may never be solved. After some investigations by the Secretary, he found 13 members who are either deceased or no longer traceable. It was decided to delete them from our members register. Some others still to be investigated.

Report of Day-Tour on March 10, 2006

We left the Festival Theatre at 9.00 am with 33 persons on board, 30 members and 3 c/o Eureka Tours. Travelled via the South Eastern Freeway and Mt. Barker to the Strathalbyn Railway Station arriving there at 10.15 am for our morning coffee/tea stop. We also met 4 more who are travelling in their own car. Leaving the Station we travelled to the Newman’s Horseradish Farm at Langhorne Creek for a very interesting demonstration of the manufacturing process of horseradish. It is indeed a very interesting and almost indestructible plant. Left at 11.45 and travelled to the Milang Station and the Pier Hotel just across the road were lunch was served. Despite it being a very noisy environment on account of the dining room being small with low ceilings and a the large number of people present, it was an excellent lunch. Everyone enjoyed their meal and the very tasty dessert. Left the Pier Hotel at 1.30 pm and travelled to the Currency Creek Winery for a tasting. Then travelled via Meadows and Blackwood to Adelaide arriving at the Festival Theatre at 4.30 pm. All had a very enjoyable day.

A disappointing 23 persons turned up to hear Carroll Hannaford of the Patawalonga and Torrens Catchment Board talk about the Integrated Natural Management of our water resources. This is a vital subject for everybody as our water resources are dwindling all the time as the population increases. She showed us numerous photos of the Metropolitan and Hills area. And all were in high resolution. In fact so that we run into overtime and she did not finish her presentation until 3.30 pm. The death was also recorded of Armando Carbone, formerly serviceman in Adelaide, at the age of 84.

Report of Meeting on April 3, 2006
Because we have been unable to contact our Speaker for the day we had no one to speak to us today. Only 23 persons again turned up today. We had some general discussions and some members told a few funnies. The death was recorded of Hurtle Jones, formerly a Clerk at Islington, at the ripe old age of 93. As nothing else was happening today the meeting broke up early.
      A Happy Easter to everyone.

Report of Meeting on April 24, 2006
As the speaker for the day, Keith Birks from Craniofacial Australia was running late we went through our business part of the Meeting first. Amongst several items was also the announcement of the passing of our Member Gordon Haddy, formerly Officer in Charge of the Mailing Room, Adelaide, at the age of 86. A minute’s silence was held for the departed member. Keith Birks proved to be a very witty speaker who also brought along a monitor and showed us what is being done in craniofacial surgery. And you really have to see it to believe the amazing results of before and after surgery. It seems almost impossible what can be achieved. To see some examples go to www.craniofacial.com.au. We had 24 persons turning up today for this meeting.

Report of Meeting on May 8, 2006
With a very cold and rainy day we did not expect a large turn up today, but surprisingly 29 faithfuls came to hear our speaker John Evans from the South Australian Tourism Commission. And as is usual for him, He was very interesting to listen to. He talked about the many small towns and hamlets dotted around the South Australian landscape the majority of which we have never heard of. Most seem to have been originated by the Railways in the early days of travelling. He is a virtual walking encyclopaedia of South Australia as his knowledge about our State and also the early Railway System is astounding. He also presented to two of our members Train orders written by them during the 1960s. One was almost in tears by seeing them. All in all a very pleasant afternoon was had by all.

Report of Day-Tour on May 19, 2006
Despite the earlier forecast of a wet day with a low temperature we were presented with a glorious day and a top of 20 degrees. And with a turn-up of 34 persons it turned out even better. We travelled via the South Eastern freeway to Hahndorf, were we stopped for morning tea/coffee in the park. Then went to “The Cedars”, which was the home and studio of Hans Heysen, the well-known and respected artist, and is now still used by his descendants. A guided tour through this beautiful home was provided as well as a tour through his studio build separate from the home but within the grounds of the property. Time well spend on this very fascinating home. Then travelled to Nairne for lunch at the Miller Arms Hotel. After an initial wait we were presented with a very satisfying meal and dessert and finished with coffee or tea. On the return journey we stopped at the Melba Chocolate factory in Woodside and also at the Fruit and Vegetable market for a browse.

With an audience of 27 persons we listened to our speaker for the day, Kelvin Wearne, from the Office of Consumer and Business Affairs talk about the many Scams, Swindles, Rorts and Rip Offs that go on in our Community. He is a very witty and also knowledgeable person who keeps his audience spellbound as they listen to the many stories he has about this subject. Very well done.
