Note: The units were formed as battalions as a result of the large areas covered and the need to have them close enough to be called up quickly. A South Carolina Battalion generrally had 5 companies, while the number in units varied from 3 to 10. The callup of 23 June was of 47 companies with approximately 3,000 troops into 9 Battalions. Under CSA comscription act revision of 1864, these units were to be outfitted and paid by Richmond and Chestnut would report to Richmond. However, the troops were to be used only within the state boundaries. The troops ranged were boys of 17 and 18 and men of between 45 and 50. There appear to be some men in the age gaps, mostly those who were CSA exempt for agreeing to provide goods and services to the CSA and agreed to below market prices. Most of the men and some of the boys had some experience, either in regular units or in previous callups of the State Troops. They original muster rolls appear to have been lost to history, probably destroyed when Sherman torched Columbia, the location of the headquarters of the State reserves.
