McWhorter ( McWhorten ), John Samuel ( L. ) , Captain. He was born at
Bachelor's Retreat, near present-day Westminster, SC, on 13 July 1846, the son
of Rev. William H. McWhorter, a Presbyterian minister. In the summer of 1864,
he left Erskine College and organized a company of 17 and 18 year old boys in
Pickens District for Confederate service, of which he was elected first
lieutenant, and later captain. McWhorter's company was activated in August
1864, and sent to guard the mountain passes in western Pickens District, and
also to apprehend deserters and conscription evaders in the region. Criticized
for the harsh methods used by his men in this latter assignment, and facing a
court martial, he resigned his commission in late October 1864, and enlisted as
a private in Co. A, 16th SC Infantry. He joined his new command at Florence,
AL, on 20 November 1864, and was killed in action at the Battle of Franklin,
TN, on 30 November 1864.
