Equipment

Kurt's tour equipment The "Bleach" -era: Guitars: - mostly Univox Hi-Flyers - Epiphone ET270 - a bunch of other guitars before these, I guess Amplification: - usually The Randall solid-state head with BFI Bullfrog 4x12 cabs (for the early days, lots of stuff is pretty unsure!) Effects: - eventually a Roland (BOSS) DS-1, Distortion pedal - lots of other dist. boxes were used before that The "Nevermind"-era: Guitars: - a Sunburst 65' Jaguar with Dimarzio humbuckers, a PAF in the neck and a Super Distortion in the bridge position - a 69' "Lake Placid Blue" Competition-model Mustang - a Japanese all black Stratocaster, with a Duncan JB humbucker on the bridge position (also has gone through several neck changes!) - and lots of different Strats not worth mentioning (- a sunburst Tele, painted blue and occasional Univoxes) Amplification - Mesa/Boogie Studio preamp - Crown power amp (later replaced with 2 Crest 4801 power amps) - Marshall cabs (Kurt usually used 8 cabs, but occasionally depending on the size of the venue he'd use only one or two cabs) Effects - at first, the DS-1 - and then later, a Roland (BOSS) DS-2, "Turbo-Distortion" -pedal - an Electro-Harmonix "Small Clone" chorus-pedal, this was used through the "Nevermind" -era and also through the "In Utero" -era The "In Utero" -era: Guitars: - a new Fender Reissue Mustang; Sonic Blue; red-swirl pickguard; a Duncan JB in the bridge position - another Fender Reissue Mustang; Sonic Blue; matte-red (supposedly a red-swirl, though?) pickguard; a Duncan JB in the bridge position - yet another new Fender Reissue Mustang; Fiesta Red; white-swirl pickguard; Duncan Hot-Rails in the bridge position, then later changed to Duncan JB (Fender had sent 4 reissue Mustangs to Kurt, 3 Blue ones and a red one. All exept one had been heavily modified by Earnie Bailey*, the unmodified one stayed at Kurt's home, and was never used in a single show. [For more info about the modifications look up for Brian's or Chris' FAQ]) These Mustangs were used in almost every show, if not in every. - the 65' Jaguar was used a few times - again, occasional Univoxes... - For destroying, 5 or 6 black&white Mexican Strats. These were pieced back together after every show. - Martin D-18E acoustic - and also the Epiphone acoustic, which was used all the time during the end of the tour Amplification: - same as the "Nevermind"-era tour set up, exept for cabinets, the 8 was the standard, for "In Utero" -shows. - a red Marshall "MiniStack", standing there next to Kurt's rack. It was never used, it was just for fun, at one show Kurt asked the crowd if they wanted him to break something, and then threw it across the stage. I believe Krist and Pat also had one of these. Effects: - a Tech-21 SansAmp Classic amp-simulator pedal, the main distortion box for "In Utero" -era - the DS-2 distortion box, probably used mainly on "The Man Who Sold The World", but he had supposedly used them both at the same time once... or twice, I don't know. (- a DOD Grunge pedal, it was a joke, it was thrown into the crowd at one show...) - the EH Small Clone chorus - Electro-Harmonix Echoflanger, and/or Polychorus, they're exactly the same pedal, only the name and the casing(?) are different. These were used for the solo on "Heart Shaped Box", for "Scentless Apprentice" and for "Radio Friendly Unit Shifter". The Echoflanger (and Polychorus, for that matter) aren't actually just flangers, they also have "Filter Matrix", "Chorus" and "Slapback"(a short delay) built in. So, the Polychorus was used most of the time, and the Echoflanger "acted up time to time".
