News of New Things!

Farewell was orginally designed to carry a fore topmast and sails for that mast as well! But due to many reasons the boat was built without it. Despite a set of sails being cut for it and most of the fittings constructed with it in mind. After over 30 years of sailing without the fore topmast, we have gone ahead with the installation. This has all been made possible by the very generous offer by Captain Jeff of the Schooner Grand Nellie to build the topmast for us!! He has done a most beautiful job building it. As you can see from the photo above this new configuration is beautiful and works very well! Fare winds Captain Jeff and many thanks! (Oh, and thanks to Skipper for the supervision I am sure he provided!)

HISTORY:

Peter Van Dine designed "FAREWELL" and traded the design with Andy Merrill for guitar lessons for he and his wife. Over a two-year period Andy built "FAREWELL" in his backyard in Annapolis, MD and launched her in 1972. "FAREWELL" was home to Andy and his family until 1982. Andy built a "Cat" boat, "Sweet Chariot", a few years after "Farewell" was built, which he and his wife moved onto, leaving the kids on "Farewell". David, Andy's eldest son, took over the boat and day chartered it in St. Michaels, MD for 4 years. David also raced "FAREWELL" in various traditional boat races on the Chesapeake and never placed less than 2nd.

Her second owner purchased "FAREWELL" in 1994 to use as a coastal sail-training vessel for her three pre-teen sons. In 1996, she and the three boys cruised from Annapolis, MD to Camden, ME. With "FAREWELL" she competed in the Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race each year from 1994 to 1998 taking 2nd place in 1997 with a crew of two and taking 1st place in all other races. 1998 was the big win with 5 awards including 1st overall on corrected time.

In early 1999 her present owner's, Captain Linda Meakes and her husband, Mike, purchased "FAREWELL". Captain Meakes has a 100 ton near coastal Masters License, and has worked as master or mate on board many larger schooners during her maritime career. Mike has served as deckhand on other schooners as well, and now is Mate/Engineer/Bosun for "Farewell". Since their home is in Baltimore, the "Farewell" has moved closer to Baltimore and is now berthed on Bear Creek in Dundalk, Maryland. During the past few years, they have participated in several maritime festivals and celebrations, including the homecoming of the USS Constellation, the Baltimore Preakness "Schooner Race", and the "Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Bridge to Bridge race". They also continued the tradition of competing in the Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race, placing no less than third with stiff competition in very close races. Their future plans include participating in various educational programs to promote sail training and maritime traditions and history. The big event for 2000 was participation in OpSail 2000 in Baltimore and New York. Current plans include participation in the American Sail Training Association 2004 East Coast Events.

ACCOMODATIONS & LAYOUT

Aft cockpit with two companionways; one leading from the cockpit to the main salon, the other is forward of the main mast and leads into the forward stateroom. The master stateroom is forward with V-berth, lots of shelves and large hanging locker. The forepeak is also the sail locker just forward of the master stateroom. Next aft and to starboard is the head compartment with head and sink. Through a centerline door into the main salon is a very traditional layout with port and starboard settees and pilot berths. A wood burning stove is installed on the starboard forward bulkhead in the main salon. The galley is aft with a single burner stove, ice box and storage to port and sink and storage to starboard. The nav station is inboard and aft of the galley sink. A large quarter berth extends aft from the nav seat. The cockpit locker is accessible through a hatch on the port side of the cockpit.
