You've got to be kidding me.
Not at all. Binoculars in the 8x50 size are perfect for familiarizing yourself with the night sky. Laying in the backyard on an inflatable rubber dinghie with the binos pointed skyward can give you surprisingly good views. You'll be able to see lunar craters, the moons of Jupiter, star clusters, and all manner of "faint fuzzies" that are actually nebulae and galaxies hundreds and thousands (and sometimes MILLIONS) of light years away! Before you ever get e telescope, it is always best to learn to know your way around with a good pair of binoculars. It's cheaper too!
Next Question: "Okay, I've done all you said. NOW what type of telescope should I get?"
