Computerized telescopes are an exciting, innovative piece of the telescope market and can help eliminate the learning curve of using a telescope. As such, I think beginners should avoid computerized telescopes like the plague. Learning to use a telescope should be exactly that. LEARNING TO USE A TELESCOPE. Once you have a computerized scope, your skills in learning to navigate the night sky are going to atrophie. "Star Hopping" is the best way to go when first learning to use a telescope. This isn't to say computerized telescopes don't have their place. Far from it. Advanced amateurs involved in planetary & variable star surveys, as well as those involved in astro-imaging pretty much require a computerized telescope. But beginning amateurs need to be familiar and comfortable with the night sky. After learning the ropes, so to speak, you can upgrade to a computerized instrument. |
