Paintings Inspired by Sumi-E
So what is Sumi-e?  It is a painting style that originated in China and traveled to Japan that concerns itself with capturing a quick moment in time, rather than every single detail, as is the style in most Western painting.
Title: Arkansas Pine
Year: May 2003
Size: 8x12
Medium: Watercolor and ink on masa paper

This painting has particular symbolism to me, as it was created during a tornado warning while traveling through Arkansas.  The painting kept me calm while lightning flashed continually outside, and it is one of my favorite pieces.
Title: Hummingbirds and Fuchsia
Year: 2003
Size 7x10
Medium: Watercolor and ink on masa paper
Title: Red Mums
Year: July 2003
Size: 8x8
Medium:  Ink and watercolor on masa paper

This is a more traditional Sumi-e painting, and shows my progress and learning of the brushstrokes.  The flowers started out as wild orchids, but they look more like mums to me.
Title: Chrysanthemums and Dragonfly
