A long, long time ago, Kami-sama (God) told all the animals, I invite all of you to a party tomorrow. And on no account, be late. When the mischeivous mouse heard that... he told a lie to his neighbor, the cat, that the meeting was to take place the day after tomorrow. The next day, the mouse rode on the ox's back and arrived in front of the meeting place... After that the ox, the tiger, and so forth... They all had a fun time there until morning... except for the cat that was fooled.

The powerful Sohma family was cursed by the vengeful spirits of the Junishi animals long ago... The curse laid upon them was that tweleve of their families members would carry the different animals of the Junishi and one would carry the spirit of the vengeful cat. Whenever one member of the cursed Junishi group dies, another is born with the curse.The curse causes the afflicted members to be weak of body and to turn into their animals every time they are hugged by a member of the opposite sex.
The cursed members have been kept away from "normal" people, their curse kept so secret that any Sohma family member outside of the immediate family of the cursed members do not know that it even exists... They carry the shame of being shunned by their own family and the lonliness of the secluded lives they're forced to live so that no one hugs them...
And so it has been... until Honda Tohru stumbles into their lives...
