IncontinenceTreatment
Incontinence is a symptom not a disease, has many causes, is not an inevitable factor of ageing and affects around 3 million men and women of all ages.

Do you...
      - go to the toilet more than 6-8 times a day?
      - get up more than 1x during the night to go to the toilet?
      - get very little warning before needing to go the toilet?
      - wet yourself when you cough or sneeze?
      - have problems passing urine, with straining or
         starting and stopping?
      - get pain when passing uring?

If you can answer yes to any of these questions, then something in your waterwoks is not quite right and you
need to take action!
The Pelvic Floor:   is made up of layers of muscles stretching like a hammock from the pubic bone in front
to the bottom of the backbone.  These firm muscles help to hold the bladder, womb and bowel in place,
and help to close the bladder outlet and the back passage.

The muscles of the pelvic floor are kept firm and slightly tense to stop leakage of urine from the bladder.
When    you pass urine, the pelvic floor muscles relax.  Afterwards they tighten again to restore control.
Pelvic floor muscles can become weak and sag
due to childbirth, lack of exercises, menopause,
being overweight, heavy manual work, or just by getting older.
Weak muscles give you less
control and you may leak urine when you excercise or cough, sneeze or laugh.
Treatment to help strengthen the pelvic floor muscles may include exercises, electro-therapy and/or cones.

The misbehaving bladder: The bladder is a storage tank which expands on filling.  Messages are passed
from the bladder to the brain via the nerves to keep you aware of how full the bladder is.  Sometimes the messages are passed to the brain telling it the bladder is full and needs emptying, even when it only
has a small amount of urine in it.  This can lead to
FREQUENCY.  Sometimes the bladder contracts and
you feel the need to empty the bladder in a great hurry.  This is
URGENCY .  Leakage of urine may occur
on exertion, on hearing running water or with exercise.  With perseverance the bladder can be trained
to hold more urine again and frequency can be reduced.

Physiotherapy can offer treatment for this condition, including:
Pelvic floor exercises, Electrotherapy, Education on emptying the bowel
without straining the pelvic floor muscles.
The Clinic has recently started providing a full line of braces, custom splints and orthotics.

"The number of people that we were sending to Calgary for custom carpal tunnel splints, custom orthotics, post-operative and osteoarthritis braces has grown substantially in the past year.  Our team felt that the need was significant enough to bring these services to Cochrane."

Acupuncture
Acupuncture, how does it work? Acupuncture stimulates the nerves
in the skin  and muscle and can produce a variety of effects, one of which is an increase in endorphins,
the body's natural pain killers.  These hormones have
a calming effect which explains why
acupuncture is so good at treating stress
related illnesses.

Modern research shows that acupuncture can effect most of the body's system -  the nervous system, muscle tone, hormone outputs, circulation,
antibody production and allergen responses
as well as the respiratory, digestive, urinary and reproductive systems.
A positive response
is often felt after one or two treatments.

What happens in a treatment session?
An initial consultation will take about an hour and
will include taking a medical history, a physical examination, determination of the problem, a
suggested treatment plan and carrying out the
initial treatment.

Western acupuncture uses traditional acupuncture techniques, such as the use of very fine
sterile needles at acupuncture points on the body
and on the ear.  Modern techniques
such as Electro-Acupuncture are also used, using
the latest technologically advanced equipment.
An enormous amount of research has been carried
out in this field.  This technique uses
electrical pulses to stimulate the body's own
defenses against pain, increasing the production
of endorphins and blocking pain signals to the brain.

Electro-acupuncture and TENS (transcutaneous electrical stimulation) treatment can be given without needles.
Massage

Massage is implemented early in an injury as the primary method of decreasing muscle spasm and swelling, as well as increasing circulation.
Injured muscles have a
decreased ability to return to a healthy state
on their own and are often painful due to a chemical build up of lactic acid (similar to
what you would feel after an intense
workout).
Massage is helpful in bringing the pain causing toxins up and out of the muscle tissue, in turn
speeding the healing process.

Excessive force put upon muscle and
soft tissue during an accident usually result
in muscle spasm or strain, as well as a loss
of range of motion.
This type of injury causes
a constriction of the necessary blood flow needed to maintain normal healthy muscle
and soft tissue.
During massage,
circulation
is increased, bringing more nutrient blood
flow and oxygen, which is vital in decreasing pain and swelling in the area.  Massage also aids in breaking up
adhesions and scar tissue, providing increased range of motion.

Not only is massage beneficial in the healing process of injured tissue, it also is shown to improve mental alertness and reduce stress
and depression as a result of an injury.
New Clinic expansion at Spray Lake Sawmill's Family Sports Centre
"We're extremely excited about our upcoming move into the Recreation Centre, as it will provide us with the much needed space required to improve the accessibility to sports related physiotherapy that Cochrane's active population needs". This new location set to open in February, will allow our team of qualified and trained sports physiotherapists to provide timely and effective treatment.

While primarily a sports therapy clinic, this expansion will also accommodate and treat a wide variety of injuries and conditions including motor vehicle accidents.
"Our current location, above the doctors offices, will remain in operation and continue to provide the high quality of rehabilitative services for which it is known."
