APRIL 2002

We have begun work on an "info pack" of sorts to distribute among students to let them know of their right to contientiously object to killing or harming animals in their education. Thanks to all you guys from Vet Science, Psychology and Biology for sharing your thoughts as students who will be encountering the possibility of harming or killing animals in your education for helping us approach the issue. Together, we can make a difference! The info pack will be posted online as soon as it is finished. Woo hoo!

Update on our animals used in education campaign

Animal Awareness plans to educate fellow students on their rights to refuse to participate in class activities which harm animals. This campaign involves research of legal and university documents to obtain accurate information and advice for students. We also aim to encourage our universities to adopt alternatives to animals used in education, where possible, through the Humane Society International's Humane Education Loan Program (HELP).

HELP is a HSI program which allows universities to loan non-animal education tools free of charge, such as CD Rom's, sythenic models and other interactive media. The program therefore allows teachers and students to become familiar with products that act as alternatives to animals used in education but that meet the same educational objectives. HELP encourges universities to then purchase these products from the suppliers, thus reducing the amount of animals harmed or killed for educational purposes.

Our campaign is centered around animals being used in education at the University of Sydney and the University of Technology, Sydney.

We will be gathering information on what type of "education" is being conducted in our universities. We will be questioning various faculties and departments about their policies towards using animals in research and asking them how they actually use the animals concerned.

If we find that tests are being carried out, we will request a meeting of some sort to discuss the viability of using alternatives to animal testing.

Please check the message board to read about how the campaign is going.

Some of the campaigns which we are hoping to conduct in the near future are:

  • Spreading the word about the joys of Vegetarian/Vegan eating.
  • Distributing information about the plight of animals and what people can do to help them (non-violently of course).
  • Distributing information about other positive reasons to go Vegetarian/Vegan such as health benefits and environmental conservation. See our 'WHY GO VEG?' page.
So keep checking back!
