Eternal Flame. Along the walls are inscribed the names of the Russian soldiers who fell in the Battle of Stalingrad. The carnage of battle was so extensive that to this day, over 50 years later, there are still scores of soldiers unaccounted for. Each year, archival research and battlefield excavation clarify the fate of previously-missing soldiers, whose names are then inscribed on the last banner. Like our Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery, a military ceremonial guard is posted here 24 hours a day, and changes every hour (see next photo).
