War medals awarded to the city of Stalingrad, left to right: Order of Lenin, Order of the Red Star, and Stalingrad Liberation Medal. The Order of the Red Star can be awarded to an individual or to an entire city, and the recipient bears the title "Hero of the Soviet Union" (today called "Hero of Russia"). This is the highest military honor bestowed, and Stalingrad thus became one of the 13 Soviet Hero Cities of World War II. The others are Moscow, Leningrad, Murmansk, Smolensk, Tula, Kiev, Sevastopol', Kerch', Odessa, Novorossisk, Minsk, and Brest Fortress.
