1961 * Gré Brouwenstijn, the haunting-voiced Dutch soprano, made a warm impression as Amelia in the Ball, despite the last scene of an ancient Ballo set, which looked as if one good puff would blow it over. |
1965 * Against an otherwise lackluster cast, Price sang the Amelia of her career, and a fairly gorgeous sounding one it was too. |
1971 * Martina Arroyo made an auspicious company debut as Amelia pouring out a melting sensuous tone, and really sounding like a love torn young women. |
1977 * Katia Ricciarelli’s superb Amelia combined hauting vocalism, a shapely presence, the ideal degree of pathos. |
* Reviews from Arthur Bloomfield's 1922-1978 The San Francisco Opera. |

1999 * As Amelia, Carol Vaness fared much better here than in last year’s Norma. Her tone was steadier, her top more reliable and her just as commitment unquestionable. The voice lacks the kind of richness in the middle register and fullness at the top to truly spin out a Verdian line, but she gave a musical, stylish and intense performance. Whatever she lacks in vocal resources for the role, Vaness is more than able to tackle the dramatic aspects. She captures the emotional range of a woman torn by love and duty, a mother, wife and potential lover, with a fervor that marks her best work./ Review |
