| 1940 * Bjoerling sang his first ever Ballo in Maschera – in which he sang the third act aria he later cut at the Met. He was rightfully hailed as one of the most striking tenors heard in many years. Power, perfect intonation, and that floating freshness of youthful tone – all were gloriously in evidence to a happy audience. |

But he is an indifferent actor and his tendency to sing just behind the beat at times further saps energy from his performance.
