1940 * Bjoerling sang his first ever Ballo in Maschera – in which he sang the third act aria he later cut at the Met. He was rightfully hailed as one of the most striking tenors heard in many years. Power, perfect intonation, and that floating freshness of youthful tone – all were gloriously in evidence to a happy audience. |
1967 * The Boston setting went against the creative singing of Ragnar Ulfung, who was trained in the Swedish production, where Gutav III is suppose to give off homosexual airs. |
1971 * Luciano Pavrotti sang his first Riccardo in Ballo in Maschera. |
1977 * Jose Carreras, his voice bigger and darker than before but still gem-like, was an engaging Gustavus. |
1999 * Tenor Richard Margison’s Gustavus III was noteworthy for his easy, free, ringing top and even tonal production throughout the range. But he is an indifferent actor and his tendency to sing just behind the beat at times further saps energy from his performance. As a result, the singing is never quite thrilling and the character is never quite involved, leaving his fellow performers to act in a void./ Review |
