1977 * The new Oscar was Kathleen Battle, from Cincinnati with an enchanting vocal sparkle that immediately called to mind Reri Grist. Her zippy acting was another plus.

The first scene was played in the king’s bedroom, sheets in disarray, rather than a public hall;Gustavus received his rather foppish entourage with his hair down, and the approach helped humanize the scene. The possibility of a day dalliance with Oscar rose to the surface (Gustavus seems to have bee bisexual), but Frisell left this matter ambiguous.

1999 * Reprising her role from the 1990 production, soprano Tracy Dahl is nothing short of perfect as Oscar. Vocally she sounds as fresh and youthful as ever while her portrayal captures the insouciance and joy with which Verdi has imbued the role./ Review
