Freya X-Spec Flight Log

My Freya X-Spec with WC decals.

This is the flight log of my Freya X-Spec 91.

I bought the heli from a member on www.runryder.com

I was surprised by that the heli was very new when I recieved it in May 2003. Nevertheless, I did disassemble the whole heli and reassemble it so that I can check through every part.

The Freya X-Spec is an upgraded Hirobo Freya specially made for the America market. The most significant differences are the metal SZ2 head yoke, carbon lower frames, delrin main gear and delrin tail pulley. It is intended to be a lighter Freya for precision 3D flying. For me, I intend to use it to practise both F3C and 3D flying.

21st Sept 2003 First "reborn" flight at Yishun. Did some tuning on the OS91 C-Spec engine. I also trim the heli in all the 3 flight modes. The MP2 that I'm using has a older style header and as a result, oil keeps flowing back into the engine causing hydrolock. Therefore it's PITA to start the engine. The split collar mast lock also didn't held well on the main mast as it keeps slipping up after every flight. Did 3 flights that day. Some simple circuits on the 3rd flight and I'm impressed by the power of the engine. In a climb, the X-Spec will shoot into the sky and doesn't give a indication of loosing power.

27th Sept 2003 Did 2 flights at Yishun. I have to share the airspace with many plankers. I did a series of F3C moves on the first flight. Hovering is stable and gives me the feeling of complete authority over the position and heading of the heli. Roll rate is better than the already very good Sceadu Evo. I can do 2 consecutive rolls without losing much forward speed. The X-Spec has the ability to hang in the air for a longing time during a climb. I can do a climbing roll without hurry. On the 2nd tank, I put the heli through some agressive moves. Flips are faster and doesn't give me the feeling of loosing power. I'm astonished that the X-Spec just keep climbing on sustained tic-tocs. Inverted flights are stable but I think I have to put in a faster piro rate so that inverted piro will look better. In a Death Spiral, the X-Spec seems to fall at a slower rate and gives me ample time to recover. The problem of slipping mast lock is still there.

4th Oct 2003 Flew 1 tank at Bukit Batok. I'm planning to join the club soon. The stock Hirobo collar locks strongly onto the harden main mast after I file 2 flat spots on the mast for the screws to grab on. Tried asynchronized loop and 4 point flips. Bad fuel causes an engine problem on the second flight. The throttle arm is stuck.

11th Oct 2003 Joined Bukit Batok(BB) Aeromodelling Club. Flew 2 tanks. Previous carb was replaced so I had to spend the first tank tuning the needles. More wild on 2nd tank. New tricks:Nose in circle, 2 consecutive loops, tail slide and backward flip into inverted backward flight. Nearly lost the heli on the tail slide. The fall is so fast that by the time the heli pulled out, it's inches from the bushes! My leg went jelly and I called it the end of the day. When I flew hard enough, the blade fart sounds incredible. It's like the sound when Yamaguchi flew during SNAA.

18th Oct 2003 Flew two tanks at BB. Please don't talk to me about crashing when I'm at the field. Spoils my concentration totally and it's bad luck to me. Managed to get the middle needle tuned with the help of Mr Walter. Header tank broke off in the 2nd flight. See...talking about crashes at the field is like a curse.

Left view of my X-Spec without the canopy on. OS91 C-Spec with MP2 makes incredible power. I'm using CP15%. Those were SAB680mm main blades.

Right view of my X-Spec w/o the canopy on. I spent some effort to make sure the radio tray looks neat and tidy. Note the new style lower profile plastic landing gear. The metal blue swah plate is made by QuickUK.
