The Smell of Purple
By: Shawna O'Neil
Close your eyes...Okay, now I want you to envision, in your mind, the color purple.  Not any particular shade, just so long as it's purple...let's just say, the first one that pops into your head.  What smell do you associate with the color purple?
I have asked several people, and received varying answers; some say lilacs, violets, grape, or other purple things.  Not my answer though...I actually associate the color purple with a smell of its own.  It might just be a mixture of all the things I remember that smell purple, but the only problem is that all colors have smells.  I guess what you believe depends on the person you ask...
I asked my best friend, who will remain unnamed to protect her innocence, and I are now in a heated debate.  I told her that the color purple had a smell and she didn't believe me.  She even went so far as to say I was suffering from LSD withdrawals and that I wasn't thinking straight (I mean to make her take that back some day).  I brought up the fact that people have smells, which she couldn't refute so she replied, "Yeah, cuz dogs can smell them."  I told her that it was the same with colors. She asked me to prove it and so I said, "I can smell them."
She laughed and tried to walk away, saying, "The smell of people has nothing to do with the smell of purple, dogs can't smell colors."
She continued to walk down the hallway, away from me, and I yelled after her, "Dogs can smell colors, they just don't know what they're smelling because they're colorblind!"
She just laughed at this and said that I was silly.  What do you think?  Am I telling the truth, or am I merely going insane?
Maybe I should ask a bunch of people, record the answers and make a graph, you know, something real official...or on second thought, why don't I just let someone else do it for me...
Instead of actually trying to do anything, I'll just stick to my theory and I know that one day, somewhere, someone will believe me, at least in a very remote and distant way.  Do you?  What do you smell when you think of purple?  Is that the smell of purple, or just a life-like and highly unusual Schizophrenic hallucination?
