The Polish National Catholic Church (PNCC) was organized in 1897 by Bishop Francis Hodur. It emerged from the Roman Catholic Church as response to the needs of lay people's involvement in church life, and the desire to worship in freedom within their own traditions and culture.
In the early 1900's many Roman Catholic Parishes in America of Slovic origin being dissatisfied with mistreatment and undermining by church higherarchy joined the movement in correction a status of lay people in the church and consequently broke ties with the Vatican.
In 1907 consecration of Bishop Francis Hodur by the Bishops of the Old Catholics in Holland confirmed the PNCC in Apostolic succession and welcomed it as true Catholic and Apostolic Church.
Presently there are five dioceses of PNCC:
Central Diocese (Bishop in Scranton, PA)
Eastern Diocese (Bishop in New Hampshire)
Buffalo-Pittsburgh Diocese (Bishop in Buffalo, NY)
