Hampton concluded his eighth major league season, his first and only campaign with the NL Champion New York Mets...3.14 ERA ranked fifth in the NL and sixth in the majors...His 10 homers allowed were fewest among Met starters...18 of his 33 starts were quality (6.0-plus IP, three-or-less ER) and the Mets were 14-4 in those starts...Allowed two or fewer earned runs in 21 starts...Walked two or fewer 17 times...Went 11-2 in decisions in which he walked two or less...Mets were 20-13 when he took the hill and scored 178 runs (5.39 per)...Went 11-4 at Shea and his 2.05 home ERA was second in the NL...Had a 2.36 daytime ERA, second in the circuit...Held the hitters to a .325 slugging percentage, first in the NL...Hurled the season's first major league pitch vs. the Cubs March 29 in Tokyo...In his Met debut, he walked a career-high nine in a 5-3 loss...Won seven of his final eight home decisions, June 25-Sept. 29...From July 9-Aug. 12, he went 7.0 innings in seven straight starts...left his start Aug. 17 vs. Colorado after 3.0 scoreless innings...Was diagnosed with a strained oblique and small stress fracture in his right ribcage...Missed one start, and returned to defeat Arizona, 2-1, on Aug. 27, (8.0 ip, 3 h, 1 r)...Compiled a 2.36 ERA in his last seven starts...Had 20 hits on the year, second among NL pitchers and one shy of Doc Gooden's 1985 club record, 21...His .278 average was third among NL pitchers...On July 5 at Florida, he tied a career best and club record for a pitcher with three hits...He also had three hits, July 28, 1999 at Colorado...On April 18 vs. Milwaukee, he reached base four times (two hits, two walks), tying another club mark...Hit safely in five straight games, May 14-June 5 (.538, 7-for-13, three RBI)... 2000 POSTSEASON HIGHLIGHTS: Division Series (SF): Made his fourth consecutive trip to the NLDS (1997-99 with Houston)...Sustained a loss at Pac Bell Park in Game 1, the Mets' only NLDS setback...NLCS (STL): Earned series MVP honors, going 2-0 with 16.0 scoreless innings...He started Game 1 and the clinching Game 5 Oct. 16, when he hurled a complete-game, three-hit shutout...World Series (NYY): Started Game 2 at Yankee Stadium vs. Roger Clemens...He went 6.0 innings in an eventual loss, and left trailing 4-0...From Game 1 of the NLDS to Game 1 of the World Series, he hurled 18.1 consecutive scoreless innings.
With an NL-leading 22 wins, Hampton surpassed Joe Niekros 1979 Astros record of 21 and became the first left-handed 20-game winner in Houston history...Among the NL leaders, he ranked first in winning percentage (.846, 22-4), third in ERA (2.90), fourth in innings (239.0), tied for second in shutouts (2) and sixth in opponents batting average (.241)...His strikeouts (177), wins and innings were career bests...The Sporting News NL Pitcher of the Year and first-time all-star, he finished second in the Cy Young voting with 110 points (Randy Johnson, 134)...Topped 200 ip for the third straight year...At the plate, Hampton hit .311 (23-for-74), becoming the first pitcher to win 20 games and hit .300 in the same season since Oaklands Catfish Hunter (21- 11; .350, 36-for-103) in 1971...Mike earned the pitchers spot on Louisvilles NL Silver Slugger team...Won 11 straight decisions, June 30 - Sept. 13, the longest 1999 streak in the majors...From June 14 - Sept. 13, he pitched at least 7.0 innings in 17 consecutive assignments...Reached 7.0 IP in 28 of his 34 starts...On Sept. 3 at Montreal, he surpassed 1,000 career innings...Hurled complete games in two straight starts, July 18 vs. Cleveland and July 23 vs. San Diego...1999 POSTSEASON HIGHLIGHTS: Division Series (Atl.): In his only appearance, he went 7.0 IP on three runs, one walk and nine Ks in a no-decision.
