Frequently Asked Questions What is Sigma Beta Xi Sorority? Sigma Beta Xi is an organization, which started with the vision for true sisterhood between all women but specified for women with children. What is your mission? Our mission is to promote self-improvement, community service, and higher education. To create a sisterhood for women to express and share their joys and pains of motherhood, care and concern for children and women's health and rights issues. Why are you a community and campus based sorority? We are a community-based sorority because first and foremost we set out to serve our communities. Although campus based as well this opens up expansion in all venues. Do you have to be a mother in order to be a member? No. Being a mother is not a requirement, just concerned about the issues that face women and children. Do you have to be a college student in order to be a member? No. We offer several different ways to become a member. An education is very important and is the foundation for many things, but there are several ways of being educated and what suits one may not work for another. How old do you have to be in order to be considered for membership? We usually look to recruit women 18 years and up, but if other requirements are met she may be considered. I'm 14 years old and I'm in high school. Is there any way an exception can be made? We are in the process of forming an auxiliary group which will consist of girls ages 13-17. Please contact us to be on our guest list so that we can keep you posted. How do I become a member of Sigma Beta Xi? You can request and application, fill it out and return it to us. Once we receive it we will contact you and let you know what steps to take. Do you have a call, a secret grip, and secret rituals? Yes we do. We hold these very close to our hearts and only sisters of Sigma Beta Xi know them. Does Sigma Beta Xi have a pledge process and does it include hazing? Yes we do have a pledge process. A pledge is needed to help build bonds between all new members and all existing members. We would not bring any type of physical harm to anyone. Do you have any chapters outside of Tennessee? Right now we are beginning expansion in other areas. Contact us and find out if there is a chapter in your area. If there is not chapter in your area and you would like to charter a chapter, contact us for more information. What do I gain from being in a sorority? Sorority life offers something different to each member. From meeting new people, volunteering for community service, having a true feeling of family, there is a never-ending list of benefits. When you join a sorority you form life long bonds with women you sometimes never thought imaginable. Often times these are the women that end up standing next to you in your wedding, godparents to you children, and are there to share all of your ups and downs. You definitely experience the meaning of true sisterhood. What are your official colors? Our colors are baby pink, baby blue, and black. These colors have great meaning to the ladies of Sigma Beta Xi. Is it expensive to join Sigma Beta Xi? No. We are probably the most inexpensive sorority to join. Any fees that are paid are solely for the purpose of buying new member paraphernalia. Member dues are only used to supply tools for the organization. These dues are VERY reasonable as well. How much time is required in order to pledge? We know that everyone has a life outside of the organization which is why we are willing to work around the schedules of all pledges in order to leave enough time for them to fellowship with one another. |
