Alekes leaned back as he thought about what had happened since he'd come to Opal Moon Weyr. He'd found out the first clutch had just hatched, so he'd be standing for the next one, Black Ariath's. He'd been very aware that there would most likely be rares, and it would be a lie to say he hadn't been hoping for one. But he'd still be happy with whatever, or whoever, came his way.
After all the candidates had trickled in, Alekes had waited impatiantly for the clutch to hatch. It was obvious the Hatching was immenant. He stroked Veri as he daydreamed about the hatchlings. Would he get a bronze, or perhaps a black, like the mother? He wouldn't turn down a blue, of course, but he could still hope. He could almost hear the dragons humming already...
Alekes sat up as he realized that both Veri and Mena had started humming, and the dragons were starting to take it up.
He raced to the Hatching Sands, still pulling on his white robe. Alekes watched as the first egg hatched, spawning a green dragon, which turned out to have white wings. It bonded to a girl with a canine, and left. A normal green hatched, bonding to another girl.
He turned his attention to another egg, eyes widening as a bronze dragon hatched. He rushed forward, hoping that just maybe...But it raced straight past him, towards another boy who had held back.
He turned his attention back to the next rocking egg, which shattered to reveal twin blues! The larger one glared at his twin, eyes glaring red, and latched onto the smaller blue's tail. The smaller blue howled in pain and surprise, snapping at his brother's tail, as several candidates, including Alekes, rushed forward to pull them apart.
Alekes found himself grabbing the smaller blue's head, attempting to pry his jaws off the other's tail. Another boy grabbed for the other blue at the same time. Both of the blues immediatley let go, crooning at their bonds.
A'kes! He started it! He bit my tail, and it hurt...
Alekes was shocked as he heard the injured voice in his head. "It's okay, we can put numbweed on your tail after you've eaten." He heard himself saying as he lead the blue off the sands.
But as soon as the twin blues caught sight of each other, they snarled visiously and lunged for their brother.
"Vabastusath!" Alekes yelled, grabbing his blue by his injured tail. He immediatley stopped and cried out, turning to croon into Alekes's legs.
A'kes, you didn't have to do that. It hurt...
Alekes gasped as the little blue crooned. "I'm sorry, 'Sath, it was an accident!"
He continued to reassure his blue dragon as he led him away, being careful to keep him looking away from his twin, as another egg hatched, and the Hatching went on...
