GORKY'S ZYGOTIC MYNCI
London Holborn Conway Hall 25th Feb 2000
So Mr. Major Label kicked them out and they've bounced back stronger,
with a amended line-up and a whole new lease of energy. Tonight
is the final date of a short but ambitious tour, going under the
monicker of Mynci 2000. Basically this means that Gorky's get
to support themselves, and provide the DJ for the intervals between
their performances. It's their show, they contol all the musical
output, so it's no surprise that the records inbetween hint at
their recent penchant for 'proper' songwriters of the 60s and
70s - we're treated to the likes of Gram Parsons and Love - along
with many psychedelic moments I couldn't put a name to. The first
set is deliberately low key, starting with a lot of acoustic numbers.
Euros's voice sounds great and the combination of this seated
venue and the laidback folky nature of this material surprises
a lot of people. Things step up a gear as various band members
join and they include a few songs from last year's fine 'Spanish
Dance troupe' album. Off they go for a break and, after some
choice tunes from the DJ they're are back and transformed. The
fab current single 'Poodle Rockin' kicks in, and the
crowd are encouraged to stand up. A few nervous glances from
security as we advance towards the stage, but Gorky's fans aren't
really the violent sort! The final part of Mynci 2000 turns out
to be a real treat, with a lot of the recent singles featured
- 'Sweet Johnny', 'Spanish Dance Troupe' etc-
and while I would've loved them to include some older tunes like
'Miss Trudy' I still go home happy. Mynci 2000 was
a damn fine idea which worked well. Whatever are they going to
get up to next! (8/10)
