The trinity

The Father is God

The Son is God

The Holy Spirit is God

The Father is not the Son

The Father is not the Holy Spirit

The Son is not the Holy Spirit

Unless otherwise stated all quotes are taken from the Authorized King James Version of the Bible.

Westminster Shorter Catechism - question # 6: “There are three persons in the Godhead: The Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost; and these three are one God, the same in substance, equal in power and glory.”

The trinity in the names of God.

The trinity is revealed in four of God’s names.

1 His name is One or Echod:

“Zechariah 14:9 And the LORD shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one LORD, and his name one..”

“Deuteronomy 6:4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD:”

The word Echod or one means unity.

“Genesis 2:24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.”

“Ezra 2:64 The whole congregation together was forty and two thousand three hundred and threescore…”

The Jewish people translate this word as unity.

“I believe with perfect faith that the Creator, blessed be His name, is a Unity, and there is no Unity in any manner like unto His, and that He alone is our God, who was, is and is to come.” Daily Prayer Book, Dr. A. Th. Philips, Hebrew Publishing Company. 77-79 Delancey Street New York, (no date of Publication given) Page 165.

“He is one, and there is no Unity like unto His Unity; Inconceivable is He, and unending in His Unity. “ Ibid. page 17.

  1. His name is Adonai.

Horray for Yiddish: Leo Rosten, Simon and Schuster, New York, 1982, page 23. “Adonai - In Hebrew, the singular is Adoni, the plural is Adonim, and the plural plus possessive “I” is “My Lords” or “My Masters.”

The Jewish Almanac: Compiled and edited by Richard Siegel and Carl Rheins: Bantaam Books, New York, 1980, page 501. “Adonai - Derived from the Hebrew Adon (lord, as of a country or over a slave) Adonai originally meant “My Lords” (the plural form being parallel to the construction of Elohim, but has come to mean simply “the Lord.”

  1. His name is Elohim.

The Jewish Almanac: Compiled and edited by Richard Siegel and Carl Rheins, Bantaam books, New York, 1980. “Although Elohim is technically a plural form, it is generally used as a singular.” Page 499.

  1. His name is The Father, the Son, and The Holy Spirit

Matthew 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

Note: the word name is singular.

The Trinity is shown when God refers to himself as Us.

Genesis 1:26-27 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

Note: God is not talking to the angels for we are made in the image and likeness of God not the angels!

Genesis 3:22 And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:

Genesis 11:6-7 And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do. Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.

Isaiah 6:8 Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me.

There are several passages where more than one Person of the Godhead is mentioned.

Genesis 1:1-2 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

Elohim and His Spirit.

Genesis 19:24 Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven;

Jehovah the Son and Jehovah the Father

Isaiah 48:12-16 Hearken unto me, O Jacob and Israel, my called; I am he; I am the first, I also am the last. Mine hand also hath laid the foundation of the earth, and my right hand hath spanned the heavens: when I call unto them, they stand up together. All ye, assemble yourselves, and hear; which among them hath declared these things? The LORD hath loved him: he will do his pleasure on Babylon, and his arm shall be on the Chaldeans. I, even I, have spoken; yea, I have called him: I have brought him, and he shall make his way prosperous. Come ye near unto me, hear ye this; I have not spoken in secret from the beginning; from the time that it was, there am I: and now the Lord GOD, and his Spirit, hath sent me.

Jehovah the Father, the Speaker the Son and the Holy Spirit

In the context of the book of Isaiah, the speaker can only be Jehovah

Isaiah 45:19 I have not spoken in secret, in a dark place of the earth: I said not unto the seed of Jacob, Seek ye me in vain: I the LORD speak righteousness, I declare things that are right.

Isaiah 44:6 Thus saith the LORD the King of Israel, and his redeemer the LORD of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God.

Isaiah 44:6 Thus saith the LORD the King of Israel, and his redeemer the LORD of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God.

Jehovah the Father and Jehovah the Son

Isaiah 42:1 Behold my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth; I have put my spirit upon him: he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles.

The body, soul and spirit of God.

My servant is God the Son, my soul is God the Father, my spirit is the Holy Spirit.

Zechariah 2:8-9 For thus saith the LORD of hosts; After the glory hath he sent me unto the nations which spoiled you: for he that toucheth you toucheth the apple of his eye. For, behold, I will shake mine hand upon them, and they shall be a spoil to their servants: and ye shall know that the LORD of hosts hath sent me.

The speaker Jehovah is sent by Jehovah of hosts.

Zechariah 2:10-11 Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion: for, lo, I come, and I will dwell in the midst of thee, saith the LORD. And many nations shall be joined to the LORD in that day, and shall be my people: and I will dwell in the midst of thee, and thou shalt know that the LORD of hosts hath sent me unto thee.

The speaker Jehovah is sent by Jehovah of hosts.

Zechariah 4:6 Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the LORD unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts.

The Holy Spirit and Jehovah.

Zechariah 4:8-9 Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this house; his hands shall also finish it; and thou shalt know that the LORD of hosts hath sent me unto you.

The speaker is Jehovah and He is sent by Jehovah of hosts.

Psalms 45:6-7 Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: the sceptre of thy kingdom is a right sceptre. Thou lovest righteousness, and hatest wickedness: therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.

God is anointed by God.

Note: The word Messiah means the anointed one.

Psalms 110:1 The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.

Jehovah addressing the Son.

Psalms 143:10 Teach me to do thy will; for thou art my God: thy spirit is good; lead me into the land of uprightness.

God and the Holy Spirit

Malachi 3:1 Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the LORD of hosts.

Jehovah announces the coming of the Lord to the temple.

Hosea 1:6 -7 And she conceived again, and bare a daughter. And God said unto him, Call her name Loruhamah: for I will no more have mercy upon the house of Israel; but I will utterly take them away. But I will have mercy upon the house of Judah, and will save them by the LORD their God, and will not save them by bow, nor by sword, nor by battle, by horses, nor by horsemen.

The speaker God declares that He will save them by Jehovah

Psalms 2:7 I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.

Jehovah and His Son

Proverbs 30:4 Who hath ascended up into heaven, or descended? who hath gathered the wind in his fists? who hath bound the waters in a garment? who hath established all the ends of the earth? what is his name, and what is his son’s name, if thou canst tell?

The Father and the Son

Matthew 3:16-17 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

The Son, the Holy Spirit and the Father

Mark 1:9-11 And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized of John in Jordan. The Son, the Holy Spirit and the Father

Luke 3:21-22 Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened, And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.

The Son, the Holy Spirit (or Ghost) and the Father

Name (singular) is Father, Son, Holy Spirit (or Ghost)

2 Corinthians 13:14 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all. Amen.

1 Peter 1:2 Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.

The Father, the Holy Spirit ad the Son

Jude 1:20-21 But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost, Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.

Revelation 5:6-7 And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth. And he came and took the book out of the right hand of him that sat upon the throne.

The Son (or the Lamb) takes the scroll from the Father who is sitting on the throne

Daniel 7:13-14 I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him. The Son (son of man) and the Father (ancient of

days).

1 John 5:7 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.

The Father, the Son (or Word) and the Holy Spirit

(or Ghost)

Warning: Most modern versions have removed this verse from the Bible.

“The testimony of early writers, the great mass of Old Latin and Vulgate manuscripts, the necessities of Greek syntax and the cry of the priesthood of believers, all mandate its inclusion in the text.

  1. early evidence includes

versions: Old Syriac AD 179, Old Latin AD 200, Vulgate 4th and 5th century, Italic 4th and 5th century

writers: Tatian AD 150, Tertullian AD 200, Cyprian AD 225, Athanasius AD 350, Pricillian AD 350, Vadmarium AD 380, Cassian AD 435, Jerome AD 450, Cassiadorius AD 480, Vigikius AD 484, Victor-Vita AD 489, Fulgentius AD 533, Athanasius AD 550

Writings: Liber Apologeticus AD 350, Council of Carthiage Ad 415

The fourth century manuscripts, Aleph and B, which are used to discredit the verses, are no earlier than the documents, such as the Liber Apologeticus (4th century) which contain them.

  1. The sentence structure as it stands in the Nestle/UBS Greek is wrong. The masculine article, numeral and participle HOI TREIS MARTUROUNTES, are made to agree directly with the three neuters, and insuperable and very bad grammatical difficulty. If the disputed words are allowed to remain, they agree with the two masculine and one neuter noun HO PATER, HO LOGOS, KAI TO HAGION PNEUMA and according to the rule of syntax, the masculine among the group control the gender over a neuter connected to them. Then the occurance of the masculines TREIS MARTUROUNTES in verse 8 agreeing with the neuters PNEUMA, HADOR and HAIMA may be accounted for by the power of attraction, well known in Greek syntax.” New Age Bible Versions, G.A.
