O Canada Part Two

Bret Hart 1983
"Hitman" Bret Hart, 1983

Forty-six years have passed since brothers Ben and Mike Sharpe had their World Tag Team title match against Rikidozan and Masahiko Kimura at Kuramae Kokugikan (Sumo Hall) in Tokyo on February 21, 1954. They were not only one of the greatest tag teams, but also the very first tag team we Japanese fans had from Canada. Since then, many great Canadian wrestlers and tag teams have entertained us. Gene Kiniski beat Baba to win the International title in 1970 ... Mad Dog Vachon & Ivan Koloff won the IWA World Tag Team title in 1973 ... Vachon also won the IWA World title in 1975 ... Abdullah the Butcher won the US title (1975) and the UN title (1980) and won the Champion Carnival in 1976 and 1979 ... The Combat (Pierre & Mike Martel) won the IWA World Tag Team title in 1975 ... Big John Quinn & Kurt Von Hess won the IWA World Tag Team title in 1977 ... Alexis Smirnoff won the IWA World title in 1979 ... Rhonda Singh won the WWWA World title in 1979 and 1980 ... Owen Hart beat Hiroshi Hase to win the IWGP Junior title in 1988 ... Chris Benoit beat Liger to win the IWGP Junior title in 1990 and won the "Super J-Cup---1st Stage" (1994) and "Best of the Super Junior IV" (1995) ... Big Titan beat Onita to win the World Martial Arts title in 1992 ... Dr. Luther won the AWA Light title in 1992 ... Danny Kroffat won the World Junior Heavyweight title in 1993 ... and Chris Jericho won the International Junior title in 1995. This week's View From The Rising Sun will show you their great footprints. To qualify, wrestlers and tag teams must have been from Canada. For British Bulldogs, please take a look at these past articles.
