We Japanese will get about a week off around the end of April and beginning of May. This is because there is a cluster of national holidays during this time. The "Golden week" starts on April 29. The term "Golden Week" was first used by movie companies in order to get people to take advantage of the "golden" opportunity to go see a film. The term gradually began being used by other people to refer to this string of holidays. Many companies close down for a week, or even 10 days, because it's inefficient to keep shutting them down and starting them back up when holidays and weekends are clustered together. Although offices tend to be open on days that are not holidays, we use our paid vacations to take an extended break from the daily routine. "Golden Week" comes at a very pleasant time of the year here in Japan; temperatures are neither too cold nor too hot. Many people thus travel to resort areas. In recent years, increasing numbers have been traveling to foreign destinations with families, and it goes without saying that it is a good season for the wrestling business. View From The Rising Sun (#70) will be a guide for pro wrestling during "Golden Week" in Japan.
Greenery Day is celebrated on April 29 and marks the start of "Golden Week." This is a day that has been set aside for nature appreciation. Until 1988, April 29 was celebrated as the birthday of the Emperor. It was decided to keep this day a holiday even after his passing away in January 1989, and to name it Greenery Day because of the late Emperor's love of nature.

Constitution Memorial Day celebrates the day the present Constitution of Japan came into effect, on this date in 1947. To commemorate this event, the date is celebrated as a national holiday. Unlike the Meiji Constitution that it replaced, the present Constitution declares that sovereignty lies with the people; the Emperor is "the symbol of the state and the unity of the people" who has no "powers related to government." It asserts that people have fundamental human rights and renounces war. It is a very democratic document, modeled on the American and British constitutions.

Big Japan Pro will have a show at an open space next to JR Akihabara Station in the center of Tokyo on May 3. It is a fin-de-sie-cle event in the biggest electrical shopping street in the world, named Akihabara by "one fan's garbage, another fan's treasure" wrestlers.
Because May 4 falls between two holidays, this day, too, was designated a national holiday.

New Japan Pro will have "Wrestling Dontaku 2000" at Fukuoka Dome on May 5. Tatsumi Fujinami will start the "Epilogue of Dragon" series as his final countdown to his retirement. The Hakata Dontaku is the colorful festival that takes place on May 3 and 4 in Fukuoka City in northern Kyushu. People dress up as the three gods of good fortune and parade to musical accompaniment. The "gods" are followed by young children, who dance to a special chant. About two million people from all over the country descend on Fukuoka for the festival, which coincides with "Golden Week." It is one of the most popular destinations for vacationers during the holidays in western Japan. The name of the festival was adopted around this time: it is believed to be derived from the Dutch word zondag (Sunday), which was taken to mean "holiday."
Children's Day is set aside to pray for the healthy growth and happiness of boys and girls. It became a national holiday in 1948, but it has been a day of celebration in Japan since ancient times. On Children's Day, families with boys fly huge, carp-shaped streamers (koinobori) outside the house and display dolls of famous warriors and other heroes inside. The carp was chosen because it symbolizes strength and success; according to a Chinese legend, a carp swam upstream to become a dragon.
