Spike got his pre-vamp name, William the Bloody, because everyone thought his poetry was "bloody awful." He was a sensitive poet who was in love with a girl who said he was "beneath her" and "nothing" to her. In 1880, he was sired by Drusilla(sired by Angel, sired by Darla) and started calling himself "Spike" because he tortured his victims with railroad spikes....nice. Spike has killed 2 Slayers in his life..or un-life. One was a Slayer during the Boxer Rebellion, and the other was a Slayer from NYC in the 70's. After he killed her he stole her trench coat, which is now synonymous with the whole Spike-attitude-thing.
Spike and Drusilla had been off and on until she left him, first for a Chaos Demon, which inspired Spike to come back to Sunnydale and kidnap Xander and Willow so Willow could make a love potion. Then Dru left him again for a Fungus Demon (Is she crazy?! All signs point to yes.)because he "wasn't evil enough" for her. So Spike returned to Sunnydale to try and find the Gem of Amarra, which would make him invincible. He also began dating Sunnydale High alum and newly-turned vampire Harmony. Unfortunately for Spike, the Initative implanted a chip in his head that made him harmless to humans. Then Willow accidently did a spell that made Spike and Buffy fall in love and get engaged. After the spell was broken, everything went back to normal and they went back to hating each other. Spike thought he had the chip removed and planned to kill Buffy. However, he realized his true crush-y feelings for the Slayer, much to her disgust.
Recently, Spike has shown his less evil, more non-demony side by looking after Dawn, Buffy's little sis, whom he nicknamed "Nibblet." He was there when she found out that she was the Key, and let Glory beat the crap out of him rather then tell her who the Key was. After Buffy died to save Dawn from Glory, Spike was heart-broken, but he still watched over Dawn.
When the Scoobies brought Buffy back, she confided in Spike that she was really in Heaven, not Hell. When a Demon put a Musical-ish spell on Sunnydale, Spike and Buffy shared a smoocharoo, "all
Gone with the Wind, with the rising music, and the rising...music," as Spike put it. Buffy denied any real feelings for Spike, but they ended up locking lips again at the Bronze. Again, Buffy rejects him, saying she was upset that Giles left, and they fight in a broken down house. The result is Spike and Buffy...consummating their relationship. After Buffy realizes she slept with Spike, she figures she needs to give up Spike completely, comparing her situation to Willow's dangerous addiction to magic.

                                            Spike's story to be continued...
