Snowy, I am just learning how to crochet and you site has been very helpful. I liked the explaination of how to change yarns. Thanks for taking the time to create the site. Don. Hello I am Heather from Cleveland OHio I am looking at your site & You mentioned that if I knew of a newer way that in which I changed colors when crocheting then to do so & email you? well I well ( THIS IS HOW I DO IT MYSELF) but I don’t know if its "right" so call it...I just go to the end of my row 3rd from the last sc-dc- or tc ( whichever u sew) & then cut off that color yarn about 2 inch in & then change yarn by knotting once & snipping the excess off & going with that new color?! That’s just me works great & never had a prob! Heather in Ohio ~A Special message from Heather :) Yes, you can do it that way. I would suggest not snipping off the ends. In the future, when it starts to unravel, and it will, there will be nothing to fix it with. Knotting it only once increases the risk that it will unravel. Trust me. Something that you have spent days making, it can be depressing to see that time and effort and love destroyed. Thanks for the suggestion Heather. I am definetly putting it on the site. Snowy H! Thanks for the tip, it's the ideal thing that I was looking for! I just wanted to compliment you on your fantastic website! I am just learning to crochet, and plan to really start this weekend. I know your site will be useful to me! Thanks so much for all of the info you've provided! Take care! Kelly F (Minneapolis, MN) Hi Snowy, I LOVE your website!! It has been so very helpful to me in my quest to become a crochet expert. I'm in the planning stages of a new project and could use some advice. Here's my question: Is it okay to use different weights/styles of yarn on the same project? I'm designing an afghan for a friend of mine and the colors I want to use aren't made by the same companies nor are they the same material (i.e. cotton silk, acrylic twisty yarn, mohair etc.) What do you think? Thanks for your help! Sarah Dear Snowy, I would sincerely like to thank you for your web page. It made life so much easier when learning how to crochet. You said how to do it in plain English. I still just beginning, but will let you know how it goes. Learning is very important to me. My grandmother, who is 95, just moved into the nursing home and gave me all of her yarn and needles because she just can't see to do it anymore. The fact that she gave them to me over all of her other grandchildren makes it important that I carry on for her. She tried to teach me when I was young, but we never got past a chain (I learned how to make those really well). I was to impatient to sit still and learn. Thankfully now that I'm older I can sit still. Once again thank you for passing what you know on to us. I know I for one greatly appreciate it. Sincerely, Angelique Hi Snowy, I just came off of your crocheting website, and what a pleasure that was. I too am a Christian and have been since 1979. Wouldn't trade it for the world. You remind me of myself, with the " not so serious " instructions.... you had me cracking up. I do the same thing... I have a hard time being serious when I am writing someone.... Even if it is suppose to be. I just wanted you to know how much I enjoyed all of your helpful instructions in crocheting. My grandma taught me when I was a kid... but all I learned were the basics. Didn't really want to learn anymore.... I could kick myself now.... she was a wonderful, very, very talented crocheter. You couldn't even see her hands move. I would sit at her side, when I was hot, just to get the breeze from the motion of her hands. Every time I crocheted an afghan.... I ended up with a triangle....what can I say... Any way....your web site help me a whole lot... your explained everything so simple and clear. I really appreciate you taking the time to do that for us. Especially us who are severely challanged in the crafts department! What do they say.... Jack of all tades (in my case crafts)....master of none. Thanks again Snowy God Bless you and your family Your sister in Christ Lainie Hi Snowy, I just made a granny square following your excellent instructions. I am making a baby blanket for a nephew that was just born. My grandmother taught me how to crochet a long time ago (actually one grandma taught us to knit and one taught us to crochet, neat, huh?), but so much time has passed that I needed a refresher. I would have been able to crochet with just your instructions even if I hadn't done it before. The pictures helped. I just read your section about you and saw that you live in Kentucky. I lived in Kentucky for a year a long time ago as a volunteer with the VISTA program (it's part of Americorps now). I lived in Lexington for 6 months and then around Maysville. I worked in Maysville and lived across the river in Ripley, Ohio. Thank you again, Mary Thanks so much for making these directions available on the internet. It's a great help. Sue Boston, MA Hi Snowy- dear sister in Christ, Thank you for your web site and crochet instructions. I am a granny, age 61. I have 4 living children and 7 granddaughters and 1 grandson. I am in bed in a nursing center. I lay on my back and Heirloom sew tiny Christening type baby gowns for baby burials. Also what are called fetal demise pouches for those too tiny to put into a gown. I believe all God's cretion of umanity is for a purpose, including that that we consider too early (miscarriage) or too long-so we can choose who is to die--euthanasia. I am teaching myself to crochet and to smock right now. Your testimony on your website along with your clear instructions are a blessing. Thank you. Flora Snowy-- I found your site. It is the greatest thing. My husband and I just moved to Kentucky from Gainesville, Florida--"the armpit of the world." I do so dislike Florida. The climate there is totally uncivilized. Don't ever let anyone talk you into moving there. Anyway, my husband will be teaching in the************* I am working on qualifying exams and getting organized to write my dissertation on the sermons of John Donne. I read a good deal; I run; and I dabble in the stock market. However, I have always wanted to learn how to crochet. I ordered a beginners kit and lots of yarn. I can't wait to start making shells. :-) Thank you for your website. Have you had the baby yet? Make sure you get lots of rest . . . whatever the answer to the question is. :-) Jackie Hi Jackie, Not yet, she’s due in March 2004. Snowy As a side note, she was born Feb 10, 2004, beautiful and healthy. She had the cord wrapped around her neck and could have died from being pushed out. She showed no signs of distress so it was a surprise. Many people were praying for us. Thank you God. Snowy Hi Snowy, My name is Rita. My middle name is clair. Hence the email addy. I just want to say thanks for the information on crocheting. I am 48 and a mom of a 22 year old girl such as yourself. You are beautiful by the way and you husband to be is very handsome. I just started crocheting and knitting. I seem to be doing more crocheting than knitting. I wish I would have searched for your site earlier today because I bought a couple of books. I am sure they will be helpful too. I wanted to make some new wash cloths for the kitchen and I bought some cotton yarn Bernat. I couldn't read the instructions. It seems every company writes them alittle different and I am such a beginner! I love it though. I Have two dogs and two cats. Well with all you do enough of my chatter, well except to say I am glad you do asl. I don't know any myself but I work with developementally disabled adults. So there thats it. Thanks again and I hope all is well with you and yours. No need to respond. Just thanks! Rita Thanks so much for your instructions, they are GREAT!! Just wanted to thank you for your great web site.My friend, Monique, wants to learn to crochet and most of the instructions are too confusing (she has Downs Syndrome). I appreciate your humor and how easy you've explained the stiches. She also does ASL for her local library during children's reading hour and she is not heaaring impared. One of the most touching things I've ever seen is when her mother re-married, the played a very romantic song something about loving again (can't remember the exact title) but Monique signed the whole song while it played at the reception. Not a dry eye in the room! Thanks again. Sharon Hello Snowy, I am a 50 year old who wants to learn to crochet. I used to know granny square many years ago. Was in A.C. Moore tonight looking at all the expensive pattern books and I met a woman who told me to look on the internet under crochet for free patterns. Amazing! Your website is Wonderful! Thanks soooo much. I too am a Christian and am grateful there are other decent Christians out there and I don't have to be afraid to try their website. Thanks again, Betty in Lancaster County, PA Hi Snowy! My name is Melba. I ran across your website this morning and find it very informative and interesting. I LOVE to crochet along with other needle work like embroidery, knitting and such but crocheting is my favorite. My mom taught my sister and I many years ago. I'm 42 now and I've been crocheting since I was about 10 years old! I'm making afghans for my family this Christmas. So glad you hear you enjoy the craft as much as I do. Take Care and Gob Bless Melba Hi my name is Shellee and I just wanted to say that I've been Crocheting for about 4 years and I kept on doing the same pattern over and over again. And when I started to surf the internet I came upon your website and now I'm doing 3 patterns now. Most of all thanks. For your website, it helps a lot. Because I do not like to read the abbreviations in the books. And you mixed in how you can read them and how to understand every word. So Thanks. Have a good day. God bless I just wanted to thank you for your directions that "walk" me through the directions in plain English. I was trying to make a granny square afghan and the directions were very confusing. I knew they were easy to make but I couldn't find any place (yarn guild, etc.) that could explain the directions to me! I have made your web page a favorite so I can refer to it often! My grandmother passed a month ago and she was an avid lover of crochet. She tried to teach me many years ago but I just couldn't manage to get the gauge right - it was always too tight. Now, I think she's looking over my shoulder from heaven and helping because it is all coming together beautifully! Thanks again for your help! Mary Thank you so much for your granny square pattern. I was taught by someone to crochet and making this granny square was the first time that I had to read instructions. Your instructions were the only ones that I could find that I was able to understand! just wanted to take a minute and tell you this site is awesome. I am just learning to crochet, my sister in law showed me a double chain, and I have made a few scarf for my kids. I just found this site and started looking at it, and I think it is going to be very beneficial. Thanks so much. Tina Dear Snowy, Hi, how are you today? I suppose I should start by introducing myself. My name is Jessica T, and I am a full-time student at ****** University in **. I am a Spanish major with a minor in Sociology. Eventually, I would like to be an interpreter for either the federal courts or DSS. I would also like to take time to go on missions trips with my church to Latin American countries to help with the interpretations. The reason I am e-mailing is because I wanted to tell you how much I appreciate the crochet instructions on your website. I am currently learning how to crochet (and I already love it), and I have found your information most helpful. Thank you, Jessica I LOVE your website, is so easy to understand, thank you thank you and one more time thank you for creating it. When I'm reading thru the instructions is as if you were talking to me personally. I just love it. MN Hi, I just wanted to let you know that your site was a god send. I have been knitting in prep of my baby due May 14th. My co-worker swears by crocheting and says it is a lot faster. So I thought I would try it. After printing off the directions from your site, I completed my first set of baby booties in approx 2 hours. (including two rip aparts because I got a couple things wrong). Your instructions are very clear and concise and beat all the others I looked at., Thanks. Yours in crochet, Cinda Hello! Awesome site! I bought two books on teaching yourself to crochet and I still couldn't get it. I came upon your site in desperation today and I finally got it! WOO HOO! Thanks so much for your efforts! I am a Christian, too. So glad to see you put that up on your site. I am a youth minister. Hope all's well with you. Take care! Peace in Him, Theresa in Peoria, IL ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Better is open rebuke than hidden love. ~Proverbs 27:5 Hello, I just wanted to thank you for your crochet instructions site. I am a crocheter who knew all about basic stuff but couldn't read patterns and therefore couldn't figure out how to make a granny square. You filled the gap between basic instruction and advanced stuff. I just made my first granny square in about 40 minutes, and I owe it to your expert teaching. Thanks again! ~Abby Hello Snowy, My name is Colette and I live in *******. I am very impressed with your website. Found it by searching for crochet tips and how-to's. I took French for over 8 years in school but like any skill, it gets a litle rusty when you don't use it a lot. I have 3 children, 7, 5, and 4 and have been at home since. My degree was in x-ray but I have often considered learning ASL and maybe using that skill to help in the hospitals or elementary schools. Anyway, I have been trying to teach myself to crochet and I thought it sounded like we had something in common. How are you going to use your major? Thanks for the comm, Colette just finished a "beginning" crochet class, which I thought meant for those of us who had never held a crochet hook in our life. Apparently I was wrong. As the only true beginner, I was gradually left farther and farther behind, and at the last class, the instructor avoided me completely. So, thank you so, so much for your clear, simple friendly instructions. I think I'll give it another try. Nancy, PA I want you to know I love your site. You explain things very well, and you have helped me immensely. Thanks so much. :) Kel just thought ide take time out ,to tell you THANK YOU very very much. Youve helped me tremendously. I just learned to crochet two weeks ago. I did a hat and sweater for my new born son. I didnt have a pattern, and can only chain link a little. Simplest form I guess. I had difficulties with the arms. How they should start . I didnt triangles and sewed them together. Thank God he's an infant. ( ha ha) its still sute on him. You and your family will be in my prayers. God bless and keep you. Pelar in california. Hi Snowy, Just found your web site and it is so good. I am new to crocheting having decided to learn this art form after so many years. Have been gathering info/instructions on the Internet and I must say your instructions are really clean and easy to understand. Thank you for taking the time to do this for all of us. And good luck with your college endeavor. Know you will be successful. Ruby Great site....thanks a ton.. Kelly Thank you for posting all of your knowledge. I am a beginner and still am all thumbs. Thanks, Jane Thank you for your effort I have been learning to crochet...but having a very difficult time...the only thing I can do is make blanket using a long chain and dc this is the only site that I have found very explanatory again...thank you soo much Dear Snowy, Your website is so neat. I am just learning to crochet and I am having fun learning new stitches that you explain. I have to admit your boss, gave me your website address,We have been friends for a while now and it was his Mom who has started me off crocheting. (I like to quilt pillows, though it can be a strain on the eyes) She just showed me the double stitch, I really have just started about a month or so ago and it was slow going at first. But I have been trying some of the stitches that you explain, you are so clear on everything, very easy to understand. Anyway, your website is wonderful and it is always nice to find fellow Christians, especially on the Internet. I too am a Christian and have been for a while. I will ask you to pray for***, God has been working on him for a while, he will go to church on occasion, though, it is like pulling teeth sometimes. Your Sister in Christ, Nadia Thanks so much for your helpful tips... Hi Snowy -- My name is Kristin, I live up in cold Minnesota -- I've been a quilter for many years, and have my own machine quilting business... I'm involved in a few quilt groups that get together on a monthly basis just to visit and get some handwork done... Despite the fact that I'm an avid quilter, I'm not really the "handwork" type, so I have not been the best about going to those get-togethers because I usually don't have anything to work on that doesn't require a sewing machine of one kind or another. Well, last week, a fellow quilter's daughter came along, and she was crocheting! I just thought that what she was doing was so fascinating and it did seem a lot more interesting than hand piecing or handquilting, so I thought I'd give it a shot... I'm headed out to JoAnn's, but before doing so, I thought I'd do some surfing on the Internet, and found your website... I was especially interested because you indicate that you've been studying ASL -- It just so happens that I'm profoundly deaf, have a deaf daughter, and am a teacher at Metro Deaf School (the first national day charter school for the deaf, and the first charter school ever established in the state of Minnesota) -- I see that you're busy with your studies in France and also have a family of your own, as do I -- So do not feel like you have to reply, but I just might shoot off an e-mail or two in the near future with questions, I'm a "visual" learner and don't learn so well from books... So, we'll see how it goes!!! I'll get back to your website now. Bye for now -- Kristin Hi My Sister I enjoyed going to your site for crocheting, when I went feather in your site I was glade to find our that you are a Christian. God has given you a gift and you are using it as a point of connection with other people that have the same interest. Continue the good work. I enjoyed the art work as well. Go and reach the multitude the best way possible and both the sites has done just that. I don't know how eitherther of you are (TJ Art) but I thrillediled to find both sites. I will bookmbothothe sites explorelfurtherther. May God, The Father, Jesus Christ Our Savior, and The Holy Spirit continue to bless you. Love Ora (O have changed it since then. Thanks Ora, some of these email go back two or three years. I know, I’m slow. But to get this far, you’ve read a lot.) Have fun in France. I have never been to that part of Europe but I have been to Frankfurt, Weisbadon, Germany. I also stopped and spent the night in the Aszores. They were amazing and I must say I wias eleven at the time but it is something that I will never forget. I can totally understand why you are crying though. My husband is definately my other half as well. But think of it as your going to check out a potential place for your first anniversary!!!! Maybe just fell asleep and she has a little bit of a cold so I have a feeling she will be up all night!! I don't have time to email you the pattern right now, but I will get bck to you about it later. I think you are right. That sounds like exactly what it is, and that is what I did. However, it just doesn't look the same as the picture. But, like i said before I will get back to you. Thanks, Angie HI SNOWY God bless you !! I love your site. One of my co workers thinks I am a wiz at crocheting but actually I dont know a whole lot beyond making a scarf. I know you will not be answering any email in the near future but, when you do can you give us some pointers or guide us to a site that has instructions on adding zippers and buttons. Angela is going to make a skirt pattern. Thanks , enjoy France and hurry up and come home . Best regards Rose & Angela I just wanted to let you know, I have never found a more useful website as yours. You have done a wonderful job. Thanks, Carol Thank you for taking the time and energy to provide such a wonderful site!!! It is absolutely wonderful gift to us all. Thank you! Bless your heart for taking the time to explain this stuff in plain ol' English. You go girl! Thank you so much, I just love your page. Keep up the fantastic job! Zee Hi there! My name is Pilar, and I am writing to you from Buenos Aires, Argentina, to say THANK YOU for your wonderful crochet site. Long ago my grandmother had taught me how to chain stitch, but I'd never gone any farther. And I really wanted to! I tried magazines, but the explanations were hard to follow. Yours weren't :o) At the moment I am halfway through my first crochet skirt, how about that? And it's turning out quite alright, too. A few things aboutme, so this doesn't quite look like fallen right out of nowhere: I'm 27 y.o., born on March 26, 1975 (BTW, you have the same birthday as my best friend), and I live with my parents and our pet cat Penelope. I'm a secretary cause it pays, but also an aspiring photographer cause that's what I love. I also like crafts of many sorts: knitting, making bijouterie with small beads, making candles, tie-dying, and more. I was in College for a while, I first tried Journalism and then English Teaching (English as a Second Language), but I realised neither was my calling. I think Photography may be it :o) Anyway, now you know a bit more about me. Thank you again!!!! Greetings from B.A., Pilar PS.: I'm thinking now - I have the instructions to two nice skirts (and a few sweaters too, but those aren't as original). If you'd like to have them, I could try and translate them (they're in Spanish) and send them over to you, along with photos. Feel free to ask! What an incredibly beautiful and informative website. I have been knitting for years and just recently started out using basic crocheting stitches which I learned in an adult education class several years ago. Your easy to follow, step by step instructions certainly make me feel as if a teacher is standing right beside me. May G_d bless you and your family. I certainly have had an enjoyable morning reading through and printing the information you have so kindly shared. Now on to looking for beginner patterns for baby items. My best friend is going to be a grandma in the fall. Regards, Bonnie Hi Just thought I would let you know that I am a beginner at the crochet biz and I really enjoyed reading through your site. It was very informative. Thanks a bunch. Vicky just started looking at your page, and I must tell you that it is WONDERFUL! Thank you very much for the page. If there is anything that I can do to help keep this page on the web and free let me know! Renee Atlanta, Georgia I was just doing a search at our local library for the book you recommend "Crocheting in Plain English". They had a copy from the author Maggie Righetti. Just thought I'd pass that on in case it's the one you're talking about!! Christie Hello, I just wanted to let you know that I have finally decided to try my hand at crocheting. I just find your website today, and I've only begun reading the basics, but I wanted to say THANK YOU for all the hard work you have put into the site. Thanks again..............!!! Christie (it’s a different Christie, folks. Snowy) Hi! My name is Aubrey, and I found your website. It has been very helpful to me...THANK YOU!! I have a question, which is probably on your site but I missed it. How do you finish off a piece once you are through with the final stitch? I wasn't sure if I'm supposed to knot it off or what? Thanks again! Aubrey;) I would first like to say that I love your website, it's very easy to follow. I would like to start an afghan, but the book says to check gauge, but it doesn't explain what gauge (or how to check it) is. You you help me with this?? Thanks, JOY hello, first i must say that i really like your website. i am working on a blanket for my Niece and i am doing the Single Crochet stitch. i am working on my third row and it is still curling. is this normal? i know u say to make sure to go all the way to the end chain and i have been doing so; however, it seems as though the very bottom of the blanket (the foundation chain) is shorter and is causing the entire thing to curl. will this straighten out as i keep going? or am i doing something wrong. thanks in advance Hi, my name is Autumn and I love your web site. I am new to crocheting but you have made it easy. Thanks, A Hi, my name is Vickie. I too had a friend teach me to crochet when we were in school. She taught me the granny square and I too just kept making continuous granny squares for a couple of years until my sister's mother-in-law and a friend at work taught me how to read patterns and differents stitches. I have been crocheting for about 30 years now and am still learning more and more. I came across your site by looking up sites for my cousing because he lives about 3 hours away and wants to learn to crochet so I am forwarding sites to him, I'm also thinking about teaching some classes because I have several people ask me if I teach crochet and I said no and they told me if I decide to have a class they would like to come. Keep up the great work. Vickie Hi, I’ve been knitting for some time now, and have been trying to teach myself how to crochet. My grandmas always did it, but I didn’t pay attention. Thanks for having a website that has easy straight forward, understandable instructions. I’ve been knitting afghans and sweaters, and am currently trying to do a crochet chick Easter egg cover and am very unimpressed with my first trying. Pretty sad. But thanks to your site, I should be able to pick up some know how on what I’m doing wrong. Thanks again, Laurie thank you for having this web page available.....................i bought Bernat yarn with of course instructions..................that [sp] wasn't explained..........was it at their web site......nada!!!!!!!!!! geez!!! you think if you buy their yarn they give ya some hints again i so much thank u pam |
